I saw a V somewhere with the front pipes wrapped. Apparently there is some small performance improvement, but he felt that the major benefit on the V was decreasing the amount of heat seen by the oil cooler.

Is this something you can buy at an auto parts store? I see 1" and 2" rolls on eBay but I'd think 25' is a little more than required.....

You would still need more than your avatar is using though.;)

Be careful wrapping stock exhaust headers. The excess heat staying in the pipe can weaken the metal and cause the exhaust to crack or just snap.

It happened to a buddy of mine on his harley sportster, with the rubbermounted engine. Granted the v-strom doesn't shake violently, it could still happen.

Still doesn't seem like the exhaust would effect the oil cooler that much if your moving and that fact that it even has an oil cooler helps. IMO, the cost to benefit ratio is just not worth the effort. But if you want, they usually sell it at auto parts stores in 1.5"-2" x 90ft rolls and it costs about 70 bucks.

If you are going to wrap the exhaust make sure it is what you really want. You will not be happy with how things look if you ever decide to take that stuff off after a while.

If you want a better solution....send your exhaust to a play that Jet-Hot Coats.

It's a great way to decrease heat...and it will look new forever.

Yup. Don't wrap them, if you want to do it, then ceramic coating is the way to go. No real performance gains by wrapping the pipes, but it will cause a premature failure of the metal of the pipe because of excessive heat build up and moisture build up.

I did it and love it. Looks Good. Better than a thinnish looking pipe turning all kinds of ugly colors.

Removes heat from the engine, my legs, the oil cooler and the rear shock...

Oh you forgot about that. Heat does bad things to shocks. Go look how close the rear pipe is positioned to the rear shock..

And there is an increase in scavenging resulting in lower temps in the cylinder as more exhaust is pulled out and an increase in power. Minimal I'm sure but I'll take it.

Wrap both pipes. The only negative does not come into play because we have THICK Stainless Steel head pipes. If a failure does happen it would be after Thousands of miles...For Me, I would get new ones and re-wrap them..
