I currently have a SV1000S. I was thinking of getting a DL, are these engines detuned compared to the SV's? If so, how? Is there dyno run sheets for the DL 650 and 1000?

Did the motors change for the better in 2005 like the SV's did? I seen a spec of 45mm throttle bodies on the K2 model DL. Looks like a PC3 and K5 SV throttle bodies would up the ponies for the DL? Intake and exhaust valves are the same diameter.

Rode with a buddy last weekend. He has the SV and we hit the local twisties and I had no real issues staying with him. I think I had to work a little harder in those 10mph switchbacks though. :D
I think the flywheel is heavier in the DL.

On the liter bike, I believe that almost the entire top end is different from one bike to the other.

If its anything like the SV/DL650, the DL has a lot more low end, but not as much high end. I can beat a SV from 0-50 in the Wee, but he will catch me, and is a lot faster at the end of the gears.

I've ridden with others on SV650's and I'm on a DL 650. On the slower bumpy roads around here I'm probably faster.
i.e. If I'm behind I stay behind, but never fall back, if I'm in front I pull serious distance in the tight stuff, and the SV's catch up on the straights.

On longer straighter roads the SV's will leave me on the straights.

If you aren't doing more than 160 kph the DL's are probably faster :).

In th 1K bikes the sv in better low mid high and w/ less injection issues.

I sold a sv1k and now ride a 07 dl650.

The sv has better ground clearance by a mile.

The dl is much more comfy.

D.T.,

Here's a link to the dyno runs....this is REAR WHEEL HP!! It's funny that you're looking at a Vee cause I was really torn the other way between my Vee and a SV(before I bought the vee of course).

What sealed it for me was the amount of space on the vee....for both myself and my passenger. The plan was to get a bike that my gf and I could use for get-aways on but still had enough umph to keep me happy when I was riding alone.

I think that I might soon change some gearing but overall, the Vee has done exactly what I wanted it to do.

Good luck,

After looking around the DL has less lift on the cams also.

Looks like changing the throttle bodies and airbox with the SV's would not work very well.

SV K5 throttle bodies are 54mm up from 52mm in K4 years. Upped compression ratio, lighter flywheel. Exhaust cam got upped also. Not sure about the DL.

Just wondering how difficult it would be to get SV power out of a DL motor.

Cams, throttle bodies, compression ratio, crankcase breather, airbox, clutch, engine sensors are all different.

John, on the RapidForum V Strom board actually did an engine swap. The airbox and it's sensors was the most difficult mod.

If it was a simple matter I'd love to upgrade to the SV specs.

One important thing to remember the 1000 isn't derived from the SV it's a reworked TL motor. You'd be better off going down that path

the SV1000 is also a reworked TL motor AFIK

Hey, according to that chart a HD Sportster 1200 has 674.4 horsepower. Wow!

I don't see how the DL motor is based on the TL motor. The TL motor had a separate clutch cover (2 piece), while the DL does not.

a lot more low end:rolleyes: think more like a little more low end if any at all SVs are no slouches down low if you put the same sprockets on the SV, I doubt you'd feel the difference in performance

not identical, cause you have to change things to put it in a different frame, same bore, stroke, valve timing, cooling & oiling system,

not the same basic motor cause the clutch cover's different:rolleyes: get real, clutch covers changed within SVs of different generation,

honestly, camparisons in this thread sound like comparing an inline 4 to a twin.

the DL in both the 650 & 1k have better suspension than their SV counterpart, DL engines are tuned for smoother performance down low
