I have been thinking about a center-stand. I really want one. I almost bought one, but then while researching I read about clearance issues... and that stalled me out (I will likely still get one eventually). I thought about Sherman's open road stand (and I really like it, I think), but I decided that I didn't want to spend $40 or so on a stand that I would replace (eventually with a true centerstand).

So, at this point I am walking round Lowe's (looking for Dupont Multi use actually) and I started down the pipe isle (sp?). I found the black ABS stuff, 1.5" diameter, I bought a 5' length for about $4. First I made a stand that sits under the passenger side passenger peg, but I couldn't get it there with out help.

I was thinking about doing something very similar to the Sherman's but with this pipe. Then I thought about what I actually did. I cut the pipe about 1.5"s taller than the swingarm (13.5" total length), I slanted it so that the 8mm swingarm slider threads sort of hold it in. I lean against the rear of the bike and lift slightly while sliding the bottom of the stand toward the wheel. $4 stand. Easy. Worst that could happen is it falls out back onto the tire like it normally sits.

I would not use this to remove the rear wheel (because the whole premise of it is that the worst that could happen is it falls on the rear tire.) This would work okay on pavment or asphalt or hard pack, but would suck on gravel.

You need something to hold the front brakes tight. I used a jet ski safety wrist band to hold the front brakes (a velcro adjustable wristband).

Sorry about the link, I am lousy with uploading photos. As you can see I have carpet in my garage, it holds the stand perfectly. It doesn't look like it, but the rear wheel is 1 or 2" in the air.

Total fabricating time 1 minute.

Good ballance job. I tried that and it wouldnt stay up for me. The bike kept falling off of the pipes by swinging to the left or right. a large base fastened to the pipes may help.

Maybe the carpeted garage is helping... but it seems really stable (I rocked it pretty good).
