I vote for Stickey Fingers for ribs and Hawg Wild for BBQ. Well Hawg Wild is a local eatery. If I have to pick a chain I would say Sonny's!

Best BBQ in the Southeast?...kind of hard to go wrong. I'll vote for the liitle stand along the main drag outside Mountain City, Tennessee that I stopped at in a driving rain storm a few years back. No idea of the name, but hard to miss.

And there are a lot of good shacks in NC that serve that vinegar style BBQ....mmmmm!

Sticky Fingers is a nice small chain...we've got two of them here in Chattanooga. And I agree...darn good.

This is going to be a long thread.

I'm a BBQ afficianado. My opinion is if it doesn't have a smoke ring, it's been baked or boiled and smothered with some stinkin sauce.

Brisket is my favorite

Baby bax aren't bad either

I've been all over the Southeast and the only one I'd say is even OK is Jazzy's here in Tampa. Not to be smug but I can cook better Q than anyone if FLA. When I go out, I'd rather go for something I can't make like Thai.

Keep on smokin

I live in Weaverville and have heard folks talk about this place. I must try it sometime. They don't have sit down eating though.............is this correct?

Not in any particular order:

Sconyers, Augusta Ga.
Holcombs, Greensboro & White Plains Ga.
Dreamland (only the one in Tuscaloosa!)
Fresh Air, Jackson, Ga.
Spiced Right, Lilburn Ga.

That's all I can think of at the moment..!

Anywhere that doesn't sell this vinegar-flavored crap that North Carolinians call barbecue. Texas Steakhouse is pretty good around here, and Britt Motorsports puts on a great 4th of July BBQ.

In Atlanta:
I actually reccomend you avoid the Shane's Rib Shack chain. Dreamland is good but rather expensive; best chain in ATL is Sonny's. OB's down in Griffin is pretty good. Pig-N-Chick is good but all 3 locations are in motorcycle unfriendly areas.

Just up I-24 from Chattanooga is the home of Hillbilly Willie's, which I reccomend highly.

Fat Daddy's in Franklin NC is also very good, but a bit of a haul from the Dragon.

The Shed in Ocean Springs/Gautier MS. Just north of I-10 on Hwy 57. Take exit 57 off of I-10. Go north. Take the first left. They usually have a band on the weekends too.

Best ribs I've ever eaten. Everything else is also quite good.

BTW, Hi everybody! I'm new here. Hopefully getting a Wee this weekend...

Did 280 miles just to eat breakfast (Squirell Nest in Grant, AL) and BBQ lunch in Clay, AL at Legends.
At Legends, get the BBQ Pork Sandwich...great fries and baked beans...top it off with their peanut butter pie (man, that's good pie).

Ole Time BBQ in Raleigh, NC. The barbeque is so tender it will melt in your mouth. They make their own sauces as well. You have to try the "Paw Paw Sauce". It's sweet with a spicy bite.

Guess my vote goes to "Barbeque King" on hwy 74(wilkinson blvd) in west charlotte. Its actually a drive in where hardworking(and highly tipped)black guys in red vests serve you carside. The place is owned by a greek family who have been on it nonstop since 196?. My brother in law, who worked there off-duty security in the 80's, said that they did the bbq and several other greek meats throughout the night so as to serve everything completely fresh, just outta the smoker without having hurried it. I believe it as the pork bbq is unbelievable and the vinegar base sauce is maybe the best i've ever had. Its a bit thick, instead of watery and is obviously home made. I hate slaw so its not fair to say theirs is nasty...you'd have to decide that one for yourself.

Its not a regular bbq place, instead they serve many kinds of food, all of it good(cept slaw)
As its a drive in....motorcycle riders would end up sitting on their bike and eating off the tray holder below the menu and speaker. Would'nt be the worst accomodations but a car is sure easier. Either way its a place worth stopping at if your coming into charlotte. J.R.

South Florida, specifically Palm Beach County...we do have Sonny's, which isn't bad, but the best local is a small chain called Park Avenue Ribs. YUM! The baby backs are always perfectly done, the chicken is tasty as hell, they do good all-you-can-eat catfish one night a week, and the service is generally always good or better. Their cole slaw is decent, but I like my own better.

In Broward County (Fort Lauderdale area), the best I have found is L'il Red's on State Road 84. It's been there for a long time, and it's a bargain!

There is also a really, really AWFUL place on Oakland Park Boulevard which I won't name. The sauce is like mud, and I'm not even sure what it's supposed to taste like...it isn't very tomato-like, and is kind of like chalky cocoa with oregano. Really horrible!

When I lived in Tallahassee, there was a little trailer on the side of Highway 90, just west of Capital Circle that had the BEST pulled pork sandwiches, with a dab of cole slaw on top...really amazingly good! I have no idea if it is still there.

I just happened to read some of the posts here about BBQ. Here in NC, we take our BBQ serious and I'm sure other states do as well. If you think Sonnys has good BBQ then you haven't been looking very hard. Sonnys, IMHO, cannot even be considered BBQ.

NC has it's own BBQ society and even have a map to go along with it. Check it out..

I give Wilbur's Barbecue in Goldsboro, NC the nod for the best pulled and for the fastest service I have ever had in a restaurant. U won't wait more than a minute or two before someone has your order and another 5 minutes and it is on the table. They take good care of you there and if you leave hungry or thirsty it is your fault. BTW, they have great hushpuppies too.

2nd best is a little place in Huntingdon, TN that has been run by the same family for over 50 years. Used to be called Humphrey's Barbecue, but I think they changed their name in the last few years. Take out only, but damgood.

About 90 miles from us in Yanceyville, NC is a place called Briggs Barbecue that makes some that is really good. reasonable price and worth the drive to get it. The wife and I sometimes make a halfday trip and ride down to eat and stock up. They use a little more vinegar in their preparation than some do and I like it.

I am not a fan of chain restaurants but Ruby Tuesdays does some of the best baby backs I have ever had. At least the one here in Bedford does.
YMMV. :)

Carolina Smokehouse BBQ in Cashiers NC is the nastiest food ever . You should how fillthy the kitchen is . You can scoot your foot back and forth across the dinning room floor and scrunge will roll up like dirt/dough rolls .
They have been closed more times than one can count for nastiness by the state health dept . ABSOLUTELY FILTHIEST PLACE I HAVE EVER SEEN . Not to mention they only serve ground BBQ so as to hide all the fillers . Looks like dried out cat food . The burgers are boiled in water with " Liquid Smoke " .
Just thinking about it makes me wanna spew . PO

Ok, this isn't in the southeast, technically, but Texas is thrown in on this forum.
Some of the best BBQ I've had has been in little 'no-name' shacks (also some of the worst).
In Texas, one of the best chains is Rudy's, great brisket, good sause. Texas Monthly magazine did a 'Best 50 BBQ joints in Texas' a few months ago. I've been thinking that's a good itinerary for some rides.

There is 'Fresh Air Bar-B-Que' in Jackson (also Macon) that has been around for a long time. Perhaps this is what you are thinking about? Good, but not really a favorite of mine.

Okay, Memphis thinks it's the home of BBQ and after living here a couple years I'd have to say it is mighty good here!

Neeley's Interstate BBQ is really good as well as A&R BBQ and Tom's BBQ & Deli are all awesome but if you've got the time and appetite for a really good set down meal Leonard's all you can eat pit BBQ is fantastic! Pork shoulder, beef brisket, ribs, chicken and even catfish top the list depending on the day!

Jackson sounds right . If I recall correctly , there is some sort of point of interest there with a bunch of Cival War building relics with a lake and a sort of spillway . Something to that effect . I think the least time I was there was something like 1989 . Maybe even several years prior to that . Getting old and having done so much trouble , it all seems like last week with little recall to details . LOL .

There ain't no dang real Bar-B-Q around here, though there is one guy that runs a cart in downtown Portland, OR that calls his "Tennessee style" and it'll do for Oregon, but he would be outta business in a week in NC.
