I have a 06 DL1000. I just purchased a JC Whitney topcase and mounting bracket. The bracket will not work with my bike. It looks like you have to take off the aluminum rack from the bike and then mount the plate and then re mount the bikes aluminum rack. Problem is that there is no access holes to mount the aluminum rack back on the bike. I tried to drill some holes, but where they need to be the surface is not flat and my drill press broke.

I was thinking of just getting a Givi rack for the DL 1000 and mounting the JCW trunk. My friend has a givi and he said the mushroom buttons were the same.???

Any words of wisdom appreciated.

I have the Givi rack for side cases and top case, and read on this forum with certainty that the JC Whitney large top case would fit the Givi mushrooms, and it DID NOT when my JC case arrived. The smaller JC case isn't even close BTW.

It was THIS CLOSE, but no cigar, the spacing on the case for the mushrooms was off by 1/4-1/3" at most. I used the metal plate that came with the JC top case (removed the GIVI mushrooms and latch triangle) and it bolted on fine and it has stayed put very well. I used black engine case paint and painted any of the shiny hardware that was visible (the rear bracket, nuts, washers, bottom half of the bolts), and then took off the red/orange trim from the case and sprayed it to match my bike to give the case a custom look. It took a while for the paint to set up, it didn't like sticking to the plastic trim, but it looks real sweet now.

I don't know why my case didn't fit the Givi mount, it sounds like it has worked for other. The company making the top case probably changed something is all I can guess.

I have the standard vstrom stock toprack and had no problems, other then those I created for myself.

I found that if I took the top rack off and mounted the JC mount plate so that I could still get the top bolts on, it worked best.

There are tons of posts on this matter, however I would rather take the time to make some pictures for you rather then hear about you making holes in your fine bike!

Got my JCW case in the mail the other day. The latch had broken off during shipping, so it went right back on the FedEx truck before I had the presence of mind to see if it would fit on my Givi sidecase racks. I'll check again in a week or so when an undamaged one shows up.

From what I have gathered, the "JC Whitney topcase" isn't just one model, it's several, depending on which supplier in China provides them. For that reason, along with JCW's being back ordered until the end of August, I bit the bullet and ordered a Givi E36NJ case from California Sport Touring. It cost about twice as much, but I think I'd be happier with it in the long run. My main "need" in a top case is the ability to EASILY take it on and off. Some of the cases I investigated prior to ordering the Givi said their case was "easy on and off by removing just 4 bolts"! I guess everyone has their idea of "easy" but 4 bolts is not mine!

JCW has 2 size top boxes. The "large" and "extra large". The extra large is a Givi copy of the E42's. I got the XL from Ebay (again, Givi copy made in China) and it does fit the Givi top rack. Here is what I got.

I did a review last year on it, and im suprised too say its held up VERY well! The best investment I have made other then buying the bike in the 1st place. I was thinking of getting the Givi side racks and getting 2 more for big trips! They will fit as paners also.

I ordered the Givi mount ($120). Fine quality and bolted right on the bike and the JCW case mounted right on. I am very happy :). Now my wife can hop on the back. She misses the touring bikes, (venture, harley, goldwing).
