OK. Things in So-Cal are getting into the 90's. Whats some of your ways of beating the heat?
Recently, I removed my Givi windshield to test things out. One thing is for sure, no freeway riding like that! I had to fight to keep my head on my neck, and my ass on the seat! Carving Angles Crest like this was a LOT of fun though! Get a really good feeling for the speed. But with weather like this, it makes it hard to stay ATGATT.
Also, anyone wanna organize a nice coastal ride soon?

I beat the heat by taking the cage, its got AIR CONDITIONING:mrgreen:
Go for early morning rides on the weekends in the mountains, nice and cool:cool:
I'd be up for a coastal ride as long as the temps are not triple digits:D
The 210 is open:cool: and it's great, so cruising to the coast shouldn't be to bad.

Did they FINALLY finish the 210 all the way out? Thats great! Makes getting to Big Bear a lot easier from Glendale.
Im also NOT interested in 100 degree weather. Thats why im saying coastal, since the water tends to cool things off 10-20 degrees.

I have found riding at temps not above 105 degrees tolerable with a camelbak full of icy cold sports drink. This is ok for me while wearing long pants and a mesh jacket. The only time the heat really bothers me is in traffic or slower side streets. I have thought about getting one of those evaporative cooling vests but I read on another forum that in the super dry air out here thay do not last that long.
I tried the no windshield trick and it almost killed me in this heat. The stock shield lets just enough air around for me.
Seems like a thing that you build up a tolerance for. When I first got to Vegas the summer heat was too much for me but after two years it is better.

Im sure im going to put the Givi back on. I was also thinking about cutting my stock shield down and making a "shorty". I will check out vstrom.info since a few people there have done that.

I chopped down a shield for a summer shield project. While offering more airflow it also incresed the blast furnace effect on the highway when it is way to hot to be on a bike.

I rolled through the northern Sacramento Valley one day last month when it was about 110 degrees. It was not very pleasant. I was wearing an Aerostich suit with a cotton T-shirt and ExOfficio microfiber pants underneath.
To stay cool (ish) I did the following:
- filled helmet with ice & water, swirled around, dumped contents down my pants
- filled pants pockets with ice cubes
- filled jacket pockets with ice cubes
- wet T-shirt in a sink and put it back on, still wet
- filled my Camelbak with ice and water and sipped on it constantly.
This worked reasonably well, but had to be repeated about once an hour.

+1! I love the camelbak on long hot rides. Lasts about as long as a tank, and by then its only getting warm. Hydrate or DIE!

Ok, Santa Monica (where I was born:mrgreen: ) and then up the coast:cool:
We could go to Topanga Canyon (where I lived until I was 5:cool: ) and turn left at Fernwood and ride up in the hills, some nice scenery up there:D

OK. Map us out a route. I dont know the beach area's very well other then the ones in the OC, and none of those I would ever consider a good ride other then some roads going into Laguna. Some of the North beaches look very nice, but the cops are cracking down hard up there. Also lots of traffic. Ask Shep about the cop situation ;)

you southwest and kali folks are trying to stay wet to stay cool. where i'm from in the humid east, staying 'moist' is no problem :) .
we have a heat wave going on here right now. upper 90's last few days with the highs forecast into the lower 100's for the next few days. and dewpoints are in the 70's due to the typical high humidity :( .

Santa Monica is quite the ride in itself for you! From San B all that way? You sure you wont be too tired when ya get there? As for me, I just take the 110 into the 10. Sure there is traffic, but thats what lane splitting is for. I have been down there once, but I dont know the good roads. What way do you go? If your taking the 210 out here, maybe we can meet up here at Hill Street Cafe, and then slug it through the freeway togeather. Maybe take off your panners if you wanna keep up ;) But im sure once we get out of traffic, youll leave me in the dust. I remember you left me far behind up in Big Bear last time around!

Ok, Hill St. Cafe it is, what time? I'll give it a try to the coast, if I poop out then we can stop and rest:mrgreen: No panners for me, that was one of the other guys, so lane splitting is not a problem, used to do it all the time on the 15 especially on Fri. I don't know the good roads in that area but I do remember taking the cage on a ride up Topanga and the surrounding area, not much traffic and has some really cool views of the ocean.

Im only a mod for the Regional, but im sure he just thinks your trying to make a buck. Not saying thats a bad thing, but the rules just state you need permission 1st before doing such. Do you think you can make any of the items I asked about? (Force brace, peg lowering, and up/back bar mounds)
It seems that there may be a market for these items on stroms, and it would be simple to make them. Lets take this too PM so we dont dirty a thread with it?

I'm planning on riding down tomorrow morning to the cafe. I haven't decided if I'll take the 15, 210 freeways or ride down ACH from the high desert. Both map out to about 85 miles. I guess I'll make up my mind in the morning.
Has it been decided where we're going? I heard Ojai and/or up the coast either is fine, just curious. I'll go as far as my arse can go LOL

The 138 is closed from your direction to get to Wrightwood (you have to take the 15, 395, 18, then come back on the 138 to the 2) And then the 2 is closed just outside of Wrightwood. So,
I was thinking of heading from Victorville down the 18 to the 138. Cut into the foothills around Pearblossom onto Mt Emma Rd, to Angeles Forest Hwy, to Angeles Crest Hwy to the meeting place.
We could meet at hwy 395 and 18 if you want to go that way. Or, I could come down the hill and we could meet down there and take the fwy (faster but not as fun)

I know that route well, but wasn't sure if you did and it's not all that easy to explain. Tell you what... How about we meet at the 138 exit off the 15fwy. that's only about 15-20 min from both of us. From there we can take that route together.
