I have a spare Garmin GPS V sitting around the house that has been replaced in my car by the (much superior) TomTom running on my PDA. So I thought it would be fun to mount the old GPS on my new Wee-Strom.

Has anyone done this? And if so, how did you mount it?

Thanks.

I don't use a GPS V on my bike but I know people who have the V and, even for its age, still swear by it. There is a RAM mount for it. $32 plus shipping at gpsdiscount.com.

I still have an old GPS V sitting around as well. I buy all my RAM mount stuff at www.cyclegadgets.com

Nice thing about the GPS V is that it'll run almost FOREVER on a set of Lithium AA batteries! And it's as bulletproof as they get.

Go for it....then save up for that 2730/XM kit that you know you really want!

I have one - use the Garmin handlebar mount (over the fork stem). It's an ok place to mount...doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. But it's not in line of sight so it's necessary to divert my eyes to look at the display.

The mount is plastic and doesn't look like it's the best quality, but haven't had any problems with the GPS falling out (yet).

For power, I use a 12v Accessory socket that's mounted in the cable guide and runs back to the battery (fused, unswitched). Ultimately, I'd like to find a dedicated cable to wire directly to the battery.

I taped the batteries together to help prevent restarts caused by the unit being bumped around.

Buttons are large enough to use with gloves on.

I use one on my DL650. Got the handlebar mount and hard wired to battery. They have different length arms for the Ram mounting system if you want to change it's position. I have mine on the left handlebar with the view just to the left of the speedometer.
The ideal GPS for a bike is the 276C or 376C but unfortunately the price is still way up there considering it's an older (but still made) model.
If you look at the specs, it appears that the GPS V is just as much a motorcycle friendly unit as the new Zumo line.

This is my Garmin Quest mounted via RAM mount ball to mirror mount.

I have my old Garmin III (pre-V, same body) to my wife's Wee the same way. She uses it for an accurate speed reading.

Im using my GPS V on my strom

I use a Ram Cradle from www.cycoactive.com

And a SW motech mount from twisted throttle

http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/2596/618/

I had to flip the bracket and drill a hole in the Motech bracket to get it to work. Had to get enough clearance for the windshield. The tom tom mounts from the back and the GPSV ram cradle mounts from the bottom.

I also got a power wire from cycoactive and wired it direct to the battery.

Works great.

Not too happy with my V. it is slow, takes forever to recalculate a route. it is pretty robust though and i wouldnt worry about it in the rain.
