Try this. Head for your favorite dirt road, find the loose stuff, then fall down. Works for me....;-)

The Vstrom is capable of going down hard packed dry dirt tracks ,but needs better dirt tires for more serious stuff, they are NOT dirt bikes. If you are strong and a good rider you can ride the dirt ,but be aware they are top heavy , long with poor gound clearnce ( compared to dirt dikes ), so if you intend of rough dirt trails get some protection under the engine and oil cooler.
If you think you are going to do a lot of real rough dirt I would not ,I would not even use a BMW GS1200.I would get a used dirt bike.

It did okay but that puddle behind the bike was two feet deep and sucked the rear tire in as I tried to ride the right side. I'd say with all the plastic to get crash bars and good side bags. Other than that it did fine.:-D

I just got back from the Sequoia Kings canyon national park. The park is covered with 2 lane, 1 lane and hard packed dirt roads. We enjoy exploring the high country, which took us to the end of the pavement. I've taken road bikes up these dirt roads, but found they didn't have the ground clearance to get through the ruts. The Strom has some advantages over the road bikes. They are: Lighter weight (comparatively), more ground clearance, more suspension travel, wider handle bars. Even so, if you're not familiar with dirt, you can loose traction and put some big time scratches on the side of your bike. This happens when the trail tires loose traction. You can help things by lowering the tire pressure to make the tires stick better to the the gravel. You can stand on the pegs to lower the bikes overall center of gravity. You can give yourself days of dirt experience thrashing an old XR 250, before taking your Strom off road.(Recommended)

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, TAKE TRAIL TIRES INTO THE MUD. YOU'LL GO DOWN RIGHT NOW. I know, I have the scars to prove it.

In summary, compared to road bikes, the Strom is great. Compared to bonifide dirt bikes, the Strom is too heavy and doesn't have enough traction due to the trail tires.

Here's some pics of the Strom in it's medium.

Not to be a complete dumb ass but if off road is new to you don't wear shorts and a tee shirt. LOL
