Gary and I are planning on attending. Two questions:

1) Where are we likely to end up?

2) Just wanted to confirm "leave @ 8:30" is kickstands up starting, so breakfast would be at say at 7:30?

Meet at tilton diner

I'm planning on this. If I remember right, the Tilton Diner is that chrome relic across from the end of the ramp from 93N, yes?

I'll be back in Farmington before dark, hopefully a VeeStrommer from Rochester I know will be coming along, he knows some good routes to return on

7:30 will give you plenty of time for breakfast there, service is excellent

RandyO, I probably won't be able to make this one. Too much work to do right now. If I can though, I'll let you know. If I can't, then have a good time!

I know that you said that you are going two up but any one in these parts with a motorcycle and the internet kinda knows the Legend of Randy-O! Can a mear mortal do this trip two-up on a big fat 1k with stock tires? If so, I'll run it by the Mrs. because I'd LOVE to go!

If you get off the ramp from I-93N you can't miss the diner. If you're coming south on I-93, take a left at the end of the ramp. I'm pretty sure the diner is in the circle on this map. If that isn't it, it's very close by.

Yep, that's where it is. Head east off the highway and you can't miss the big silver diner on the right.

I haven't seen any response yet to this one?? I suspect the answer is "mortal specific". With partial knowledge of the route I would make the following guesses:

1. Stock tires on a 1k should be fine.

2. 2-up on dirt depends a lot on experience and exact conditions encountered. I would have done this 2up with my wife if she was free on Sunday. If it rains some of these roads have the potential to become very greasy and could be a challenge unless we reroute due to conditions. Most Stroms are not wearing mud shoes.

If somebody else PM'ed you with more info feel free to ignore this.

I expect most of the gravel road conditions to be hard packed with a loose scattering of surface gravel

I now have a continental Road attack (sport touring tire) on the rear, stock trailwing still on the front

I just wanted to thank RandyO for a great ride. We got a little wet, but hardly anything compared to what seemed to occur in isolated locations around the state while we road. It was interesting to round a corner that we took at 9am, and find the road on the far side coated with gravel washed from the shoulders by 7pm that same evening.

Since I didn't get in until late last night I haven't pulled my pictures and gps tracks for either ride this weekend. I'll post more once I get that info.

The short version is that we got together for breakfast and left just about on time with five people on four bikes. Randy lead us on some very nice back roads to the worst of the dirt roads we traveled. Just before hitting the dirt we got a moderate rain, wetting everything, especially helmet shields. The first road was a little challenging but all the difficulty values got doubled due to the fact nobody couldn't see the road well enough to pick out a good line. The three of us following Randy spent a lot of time standing on the pegs. Randy rode along seated, with passenger, on a lowered Vee (only bike of the three without a skid plate), on his new rear tire (IMHO not a dirt tire). Nobody had any trouble with the roads, although Randy did leave a few exhaust marks on a couple of corners. And there is probably a Class A motor-home that could use a good upholstery cleaning on the driver seat shortly after Gary passed it.

Once back to tar we simply plotted a course for the next dirt section and repeated until dusk. The rest of the dirt roads turned out to be very well maintained and easy enough for even Tucker to have liked them. Also the weather cooperated so that we didn't have the visibility issues anywhere on the trip except for that first (worst/most fun) dirt road.

It's too bad Dan didn't join us because he's always looking to do more dirt AND I was starting to believe him that VT really does have the best roads. It turns out that if you ride in NH near the VT border, we've got some awfully nice roads too!

So thanks again Randy for planning this one, and to Tom (unknown handle) for taking his turn in leading us to the dirt. Gary and I had a great time, and learned a lot of new roads and connectors.

a great crew to ride with, no stragglers, everybody was able to maintain pace even on the loose gravel

Big THANKS to Tom C. for coming along, he has quite the knowledge of Grafton County's back roads
