Am contemplating sending my bike and best girl to Oz, next year maybe, so we can do a bit of riding. Anyone had any experience with this, re road legal requirements etc? We're all set up for 2up touring, and would love to spend some time touring the Great Red Land.:D [West Island:D ]

I should imagine that from NZ it's not to much of a problem.
There are several companies here that organise rides in NZ where they put all the bikes in a container and ship them over, the riders fly across pick the bikes up, ride and repeat the procedure on the way home. I'm sure that the opposite can be done reasonably easily.
Road rules are basically the same, fuel is the same, the beers weaker, the red wine is better but bring your own white and if you want decent coffee stay in Melbourne (that should cause some arguments :) ).

You could leave your strom at home, buy one in OZ and have a bike in each country, that way you could zip back and forth at will and ride whenever.

Give you $4,000 for yours?:D :D :D
Flying to Norfolk Is tomorrow, would take the bike there but it is only 5x8km!
Never get past 3rd gear!:D

Get routed http://www.getrouted.com.au/ are on the business of shipping bikes back and forth, they are very friendly and will give you all the info.
If you want some company once you are here, I will love to ride with you. Have only been riding here for 7 months so I don't know the country yet.

Yank stepping in here. toured Victoria, AU and SI NZ over Christmas. I might have some addtional information.

Mike at NewZealand Adventure Tours in Christchurch has shipped his Vee to AU once or twice he may be able to give you some helpful insights. He is writing a book about travelling in AU - looking forward to reading it.....great guy-great place to rent bikes on the SI.

You can rent a BMW 1150 GS in Melbourne from Garner - if you want to try a big beemer.....it was great on the open roads and fine in the few twisties we encountered (missed the Great Alpine Hwy because it was on fire - but hit some other great places in Victoria and especially the GOR...wow!), and along some of the narrow roads up near the Gampians it was very happy taking the dirt when necessary.

Hope that helps a little -

Last year Brisbane to Vancouver was around $1500.00 to $1700.00 each way. Rode Vancouver to Toronto then down into the states and return to Vancouver. Well worth it when you consider the cost to hire. At least you know your bike is set up how you want it and is reliable.
