View Full Version : Mountain Landscapes in NH/VT????

I just recently got back from a photoworkshop down in Oaxaca Mexico where I really caught the bug for landscape photography (also one of the reasons I got my strom over my old Honda Blackbird) in a fashion similar to Galen Rowell if any of you know his work. Basically lots of interesting skys land features and sometimes using figures in them.
Now that I have this great bike I can ride for hours and go up fire roads I need to find out some good locations to try out and any ideas you guys can give would be a huge help, thanks.

NH has some great locations to give what you're looking for. Travel up to the northern NH/VT border and there are areas looking out across the CT river with beatiful mountains behind.
I sped through many VT farms on Stromtrooper rides and have seen exactly what you're looking for, too. Unfortuneately, on those ride I just follow and enjoy the trip, rarely ever knowing where I am (seriously, these guys go way out there in search of twisties).

Yeah, a ride is a ride with those guys -- no chance to take pixtures at all!

You know, you guys are right. I propose that we do a photo ride where we do lots of stops and get some great pictures. I have a bunch of really nice places in mind already. Let me know if you are interested. Maybe we should start a new thread on this? What do you think?

It's hard to force yourself to stop when you're in nice places like that, and I know it wasn't easy when I was looking at your excellent Nova Scotia report.
A ride just to take pictures is something I'd be up for. I got 85 shots on my last Maine trip.

Thanks Tom. It is hard for me to stop, but if that is the theme then I'm all for it! Do you want to post a new thread for it?
I would love to see some of those pics from Maine. Are you going to do a ride report?
Sorry for hijacking BloatedBird, but you have a great idea! Let's all get together and do it.

I agree. Some of the best ride pics I have are only because the group stopped, and so I snapped some pics. However, on one occasion, I backtracked all of 500 feet for this pic after a group stop:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/dmf109/September%202006%20ride/SunnyTrees.jpg
I rode past and saw the sunlight filtered through the trees. Thankfully the group stopped and I had time to take the pic. Personally, I like it.

Look at the tips of the trees bending to their right; you can almost see a gust of wind pulling them along. And that field, it looks like it's melting away into the same wind, but also pulling away from the shadows growing like clouds around it. I can feel gusts of wind coming and yet something calm when I look at the sky and clouds. Pretty nice.

I was very lucky to get that shot we were following a very SSLLOOOOW
MINI VAN that Tom & I raced past to make the summit to grab the last rays of light . Now here is the best part ...My son had My 256Mb card & I only had a 16Mb in the camera........I had to remove the card and use the camera's 4mb internal memory to ge the photo! Then after reviewing I almost deleted it
Happy now that I didn't:mrgreen:
Now this sounds like fun. I had a hoot riding with you guys last year and was looking forward to riding with you again. I don't really like to venture too far from home and my back only allows me about 45 minutes to an hour of riding time in between stops. Sooooooo........ frequent stops for photo ops sounds great. If everything works out maybe my wife and I will join you again. Ride safe everyone. Tim.

I am using a Fujifilm FinePix F30 compact camera.
6.3megapixel with Super CCD technology with a 1gb XD picture card.
It's easy to use, and the rechargeable battery lasts an extremely long time between charges, even with heavy use.

None of my pixtures in this thread yet, but I'll put a few here now. These are all taken with a Sony DSC-H1, 12x optical zoom, 5.1 megapixels. All of these are from Mount Desert Island in Maine. Reduced to 800 x 600 pixels.

These are other cameras I like a lot, starting with the tiny Sony DSC-U30. It's 2 megapixels, no zoom, and takes great snapshots.
http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/4307/sonycybershotdscu30177xov7.gif
Then there is my digital Canon collection. A710-IS with 6x zoom and 7 megapixels, and SD900, 3x and 10 megapixels. They both take nice pictures, but I'm partial to the 710 and the higher power zoom lens. It also runs on double A batteries.

I want to do more with night shots like you and Jack have posted. Many cameras even come with an exposure setting for night time and they are getting so good at getting it right that it's easy to spend more time composing the pictures.

Relatively small. It's a little chunky, but easily fits in a tank bag. It runs on AA batteries and has image stabilization. Full review here: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/A710/A710A.HTM

That plane almost landed on me one evening when I was fishing out in the middle of Long Lake 14 yrs. ago! I had no running lights on the boat and I clipped my million candlepower spotlight to my trolling motor battery and flashed him just in the nick of time! The plane was about 100 yards from landing on me and throttled up pulled up at the last second.
