SydStrom 001, Plan 1A rev0:

Welcome to the SydStrom 001 planning thread!!

There has been interest from North and South and obviously it will be impossible to make it easy for everyone (or even anyone?) to get to. Some prefer dirt, some don't go off road at all. Some like all-dayers, some just a couple of hours before lunch and family stuff for the rest of the afternoon. I'm amenable to all of them - I just like to ride! Hopefully there will be more of these so we can go every direction eventually - dirt directions too!

Bearing that in mind - here's my though's for number 1:

Meet somewhere central-ish west near the major arterials - corner of the M5/M7 (I think there's a bike shop on the Hume about there - could be an easy place to meet) at about 9:30 - depart 10am. From the North you can come F3/M7 - South come along the M5, Shire (and Sth Coast) - go Heathcote Rd and it's easy from Sydney. I live just off the ED if anybody want's to come by there a bit earlier? There's a bunch of great roads we can do from there!

West down Camden Valley way onto Bringelly Road, onto Greendale Rd - the lookout at Mulgoa. South on Greendale to the Oaks, Burragorang and on to Picton - snack time at Picton.

Rick scissors paper at Picton to decide whether we go south through Thirlmere/Buxton/Hilltop and attack Mac Pass, Illawarra Escarpment, Mt Keira and the Royal on the way home or cut it short and go east via Douglas park, Broughton pass, Appin, Bulli (perhaps Mt Keira - it is close..) and the Royal.

Next time we'll go North - say Georges Downes Drive to Broke and Singleton and home via the Putty.

How's that sound?

Dean

It's good to see that you guys are trying to organise some rides.
Maybe one day we can ride north, you can ride south and we can throw things at each other across the Murray. :)

Sounds like a start of a plan , I just checked the weather forcast Sat Sun Monday overcast about 18 degrees no showers.Rain on Wed Thursday Friday so even if it's a day out we should be fine.

If we get ideas of who wants to come and from were we can get a meeting point .

I like the plan.

I'm coming from Epping, just give me a meeting point and a time and I'll be there sharp.

Sounds good Deano. The bike shop your talking about is that the new Sydney City motorcycles shop on the Hume Hway on the left hand side going south?

10.00 am leave sounds good.

How about we meet at the " crossroads hotel " as it easier for people coming from the M7 as it is not as much backtracking. It's at the intersection of the hume highway, campbelltown rd and camden valley way.

How about we meet at Sutho at 9.15 at Tynans Mazda cnr Acacia Rd and Old Princes Hway to ride to the meet point.

G'day all,

Graham's suggestion re meeting at the Crossroads Hotel makes sense, coz ya can't miss the "Crossroads".

Dean, given you are the instigator, looks like you've been elected Ride Captain. To eliminate confusion, should we confirm the revised meeting point?

Cheers,

I suggest we contact each other and get a contact list with phone numbers ,someone is always late or cannot make it at the last moment .
My experence ( I was organising road trips ,tours etc back in the 70's )is we meet somewere like the crossroads as it's easy to find at 9.30 for a 10.00 departure .If you are late you can call and catch up somewere down the road.
I suggest someone brings a first aid kit cause if you got it you will never need it.Same applies to a puncture kit and pump.
Someone who is good with a camera bring it along.
If someone has a good road map and can email me acmecarpetcleaing@hotmail.com I will make copies and laminate them for everyone if you like .
If it suits everyone I will go "tail end Charlie" as I have done my share as road captain a long time ago.

Someone who is good with a camera bring it along.

Absolutely compulsory. You guys have about 8 or 9 group rides with photos to do before you catch up with us people from the south so it's about time you got on with doing things instead of talking about it. :D :D
If photos aren't posted within hours of the ride finishing we will probably start sending our 1 and 2 degree mornings north for you guys to enjoy on your next ride.

It all sounds good to me,Crossroads hotel, hume at Cambelltown.About the M7? how do I ride it without an etag? Having lived in Japan for 8 years,I have arrived back here wondering how all this toll stuff works out.

graham downunder
06-26-2007, 05:22 PM
You can not use the M7 without an etag, so you will have to find another way to the meeting spot.we are not travelling any toll roads .Who is bringing the camera ???.

Kiwi you can keep your cold mornings I know what its like .I did 1979 Alpine rally on my XS1100 at night on frozen dirt roads out the back of Camberra the temperature at 1.00 am when we were riding was - 8 celcius without the wind chill factor .Anyboady complain about trailwing tires in the dirt should think about the "fun " we had with big street bikes and street tires on frozen dirt roads . You were best to follow exactly someone else path as they broke the ice with there tires ,pitty I was the lead rider !

I will bring the camera.
I don't pretend to be an expert but I have published several articles, if you want to see the last one (and the pictures) have a look at Australian Flying from May2007.

Good one Pablo. I'll bring a camera as well, to ensure we don't miss any of those magic moments! I reckon the BOM Gods are smiling on us...... and Graham has purchased us a fair weather insurance policy with his acquisition of new rain pants.

My Mobile is 0418 290 511. See you all on Sunday.

I think you can use any of the toll roads without a tag? They send you a lovely notice in the mail and you get a fortnight to pay or they slug you with a $10 'Administration' fee!

You might want to check that info first?

I almost always have my camera - and sometimes the video on the front too.

PS: Just checked - you can get and 'e-pass' for the M7 up to 48 hours after your trip.

Tell ya what, guys, I for one am seriously looking forward to checking out everyone's farkles.

I'm very much under-farkled (?). My wife has tolerated me for a long time spending vast amounts farkling my bicycles. I'm battling uphill convincing her of the necessity for additional motorcycle farkles. Sheesh....you should have heard the derisive comments when I announced I "needed" a lambswool seat pad. Its all good.....:)

I have a (please don't hurt me . .) non-Strommer coming. He rides an FZ-6 and is actually a member of this forum - mostly so he could see some of the links I sent him...

We never have a problem with non Stroms down here. We just see them as a challenge and a conversion target.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the ride yesterday - making a non-Strommer feel welcome... :)

I downladed the ride from my GPS and put it into Google Earth - kinda interesting if you 'play the tour' after opening the .kmz file.

Takes a bit of time though so only do this if you've got good bandwidth and 20 minutes on hand!

Anyway, we had a ball zipping up through the Royal on the way home - good roads and some great corners. That stretch from Oakdale to Picton was also lots of fun.

Thanks all.

Cheers
