RI looks good. And I know this diner...

I wouldn't mind riding some of RI and CN sometime. But that may be too far SE for this weekend. A group of us talked last weekend of getting together someplace that would allow JohnS to meet us Saturday after his commitment in NY. We also need to abduct jackpiner57, who lives in northern VT. IthakaBound: any chance of getting more west/north?

Hey JohnS, you still available?

VtSTROM-K5: I'm wide open for any kind of riding/camping.

Anyone else? How's weather looking?

IthakaBound
05-31-2007, 08:31 AM
I don't mind riding in the rain when I need to, but there's something uniquely twisted about riding to someplace in the rain, so you can ride in the rain while you're there, and then ride back in the rain.

So.... maybe.

Then again, weather.com is as reliable as any game of craps.

Tell me there will be good food?

Hi Folks. Just getting home from a week away. I could still be convinced to come meet up with you, I figure if you've got a loop planned, I'll run it backwards until I run into you...

However, on examining my map, Clinton and Franklin Co. may be a bit far north for my schedule. I figure muster is at 9:30, so the event will likely start 10:30, figure it runs 2 hours? I wouldn't be leaving my house until 2:00 at the earliest and it's a good 3 hours up there riding at a spirited pace. I may have to sit this one out, but then again I do owe Tom a retaliatory crack or two if he's going...

Post your route or a location of where you'll be 5-6:00 ish and I may swing up. Is there camping planned?

John, no route, to be honest. All I know is we're going north:confused:...in VT:confused:...otherwise I have no idea where we'll be (You might try and keep an ear out for the sonic boom trailing Tom).

Oh, just remembered, I think Jack and I are camping at Lake Carmi Sat night. I'll call you on your cell around 8:30 - 9:00 am when I meet up with Jack. From there we can figure something out for a meeting point for ya. Good luck on the event tomorrow.

Nice report Jack! I had a great ride. One of my favorites! Absolutely beautiful scenery. I only took one picture the whole time. I just didn't want to stop. This is what the Givi E21N side cushions were really designed for.

Dan stopped by today after you guys split, and we went for a ride. More beautiful scenery. We have to do this one again when the rest of you can come. It was local to me. Rt. 135 from Woodsville to Lyman and Lisbon. Them over to Sugar Hill and Franconia. I dropped my bike on a deep sand turn around at the Smutty Hollow Rd. dead end. I should have gotten a picture of it laying on the ground.:D

This was I think the Best ride weve done in a while....

I am about to bite the bullet and get the replacement Chain/Sprockets set, Rear Anakee, and cush drive replacements  (Problly order next payday) So I'll be needing the help of My Mechanic ( and his tire mount & ballance specialist) around the end O'month:rolleyes:
I would like to go again somewhere comparable to this last ride Make it a 3 daytrip? Maybe the N.H/Me. ride :-D

Well, I had a great time! I agree with you guys that it was a fantastic ride through beautiful country. Lots of speed, lots of twisties, lots of dirt. I liked the freeness of the whole thing too; no GPS, or any planning at all. We just rode wherever we wanted and took whatever route looked promising when we got to it.

And Tom, that area of NH we took tonight was incredible! Amazing views looking out over the CT river. A whole lot of really twisty backroads that opened to some grand looking estates. I definitely want to head back there soon.

I just got home about a half hour ago. It started raining as I entered Ashland, NH (about 6:30ish). I got off 93 to find a place to put in my liner, switch to my clear sheild and put on my waterproof gloves. I felt so comfy afterward that I decided to forego the highway and eneded up cruising down Rt3 through Meredith. Those new pants kept me nice and dry! The jacket worked great too. I did a but under 700 miles for the trip (and still seem to be getting high 30s for mpg).

Looking forward to the next ride.

jackpiner57

Jack, I was going about 3 mph doing a u-turn and the front sunk and washed out in some really soft deep sand. It looked solid because it had been rained on and had a smooth skin on top, but gravity won. It was so soft and deep that my left front turn signal got buried in it and didn't break! Those scratches on the fairing ought to buff out.:D

You, so kindly relieved me of all the beers left in the E21 side cushion before I was able to make off with them when I left the Lake Carmi campground. Remember? Hey wait a minute, YOU bought the beer and I didn't pay you anything!

Jack, get the OEM countershaft sprocket with the rubber noise dampener. The chain will come with a rivet type link. Get a DID or EK hollow pin end rivet type. I'll be needing a new rear meat by that time too. We can do both bikes together.

Ask Dan about his chain!  We can do another tech day with Dan's bike as the Guinea Pig. He needs a chain and sprockets. He needs the valve clearances checked/adjusted too. We can do it at my house.

A Western Maine ride sounds awesome! I know a lot of the roads over there.

Dan, I'm glad you liked that ride. I have a lot more like that in store. So it sounds like tonight you liked the new pants!:D

Tom, it would have been nice to have you with us. Hope you can make one of the rides soon.

I had checked my chain prior to leaving for the weekend. Then after meeting up with Tom and talking chains, I decided to check mine again. The thing was so loose it was resting on my center stand foot! Very strange. The foot showed no sign of the chain rubbing it though. So, we tightened it up (by we, I mean Tom :)). I rechecked it again when I got home and it was somewhat loose again. I'm going to order new chain and sprockets and replace ASAP.

Yeah, my first went quickly like that near the end after rattling for 500 miles. I parked the bike and ordered the parts when it loosened up as much as yours is now.

It's much easier to replace a chain and sprockets than a broken engine case. When I pulled the old chain off to replace it, the pins were worn about 15-20% through.

I arrived home sunday and did the usuall , pulled the luggage and then took a power nap, after dinner I went out and checked the chain , lubed it. Checked the tire press. & tread depth , need a new rear soon .:), cleaned & waxed the shield,I noticed the lower mounting screw was GONE ,Not loose but missing!:???:
I found an adequite replacement unit and went in to shower. Monday morning as I'm riding to work , I looked at the Guage pack for the Nth time and as I sweep over to the r.h. Mirror I notice that the right fork tube is raised up 7/16" in the clamp:confused:. I arived at work in less than 2 min. and at breaktime (9:00) I got a 10mm socket and the ratchet out and reset the tube/clamp the Upper bolt on the lower clamp was loose enough to turn by fingers  the upper clamp bolt was only slightly tighter:rolleyes:.. I am to blame as I adjusted them last fall after the Fall at the Covered Bridge and I didn't then ( And still don't:() own a torque wrench !? but I'm gonna....

Dan who did you order from???

I got the chain for Adventure Motostuff: http://www.amotostuff.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=D18525VM2-120&Category_Code=dl1000_chain_sprockets
My second order from them. The package already arrived today (ordered Monday). Nice!

The sprockets I got from ProSource Motorsports (went with the OEM stuff) http://www.prosourcemotorsports.com/fiche_select.asp?vcc=Motorcycles&mfg=Suzuki. I thought of ordering local, but the only Suzuki dealer I give any business to is in Concord, and I know they'd have to order the parts, then I'd have to drive up. So, I decided to try ProSource. I ordered Monday also, and I just got an email that they were sent out today.

Lastly, I ordered the DID chain rivet tool here: http://www.mikesxs.net/mikesxs-tools.php?category_id=7.1 per jackpiner57s advice. The price is certainly right!

And lastly, lastly, I ordered a new Shoei RF-1000 helmet: http://www.shoei-helmets.com/road/helmets_road.aspx?h=3 I love the Shoei RF-900 I have, BUT, I've noticed in really hot riding that I swelter in the thing. I did some research that suggests that the new 1000 series is much better vented. Also, I've been really wanting a nice light colored helemt to keep the sun from frying my few functioning brain cells. I ordered that from my local Ducati/MotoGuzzi/Aprilia dealer: http://www.seacoastsport.com/prod01.htm (where I also got my tires and various clothing). They're a great dealer and fun to visit. I want the Moto Guzzi Norge in a bad way. What a beautiful bike! Be nice not to worry about a chain too. But, I'm a 1 bike kinda guy and love the 'Strom too much to ever part with it. *sigh*. What other bike can you comfortable do 700 miles in 2 days over dirt/back roads/highway and enjoy it all? That's right class, a V-Strom!
