FWIW, I'm starting a 12+ month tour of the US in Febuary, coming out of Ft Worth TX, on a DL650. Most of my time will be in the west and midwest, but I plan to go up through Canada to Alaska in July. I also want to hit Maine and the great lakes as I've never been there.
I've been wishing for such a trip for a couple of years now and finally seem to be in a position to do it. Putting all my stuff in storage and selling some things, no bills other than the cell phone and bike insurance  I'll be on a fair number of rough roads (like in CA Baja), so this should be a pretty good chance to see how the DL650 compares to thest of the adventure touring bikes :)

Wow,
Do you plan to camp most of the time?
Where abouts in Foat Wuth are you now, until February?
Sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime chance - I'm jealous...

I'm in the Fossil Creek area, north of Ft Worth off of 820.
And yes I'll be camping about 80% of the time. I've basically budgeted enough for a normal hotel once a week, along with maintenance costs misc, food, camping costs, etc. I have about the first 1/3 of the route planned out, the last bit I'll probably plan while im on the road. Should be interesting =)

Do you have Nebraska planned yet? I am sure a couple of us could steer you toward some campgrounds and decent roads at the least! Maybe a meal if you are going through Omaha

I'm planning to hit all of the states west of the Mississippi river, so at some point I'll be going through Nebraska, likely in late spring. :P
Right now my planned route just takes me from TX through Oklahoma, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Southern Ca, and Baja. From there I'll probably ride up to middle of CA and cross eastwards across the US, stopping in TN for family. Then head to the great lakes / maine area, and back across westward towards Washington state. Basically zig-zagging across the US until I wind up in Wasington State, and from there up into Canada :D
From the pictures I've seen of Alaska and Canada, I may not come back

I live in the middle of the Great Lakes so if you want routing advice in this area just ask.

Sounds good to me :) Seems there are a fair number of V-Strom riders in the northeast, maybe we can get some kind of a v-strom meet going :P

I live in Springfield,IL. If you are planning on being in the area, let me know - I'll do what I can to help you in your journey. I also have 6 wooded acres near Lake Shelbyville with a trailer I could let you use. It's a beautiful site with 440 feet of river front. Good luck - hope to see you.
