I bought my DL1000 last June with 2800 miles on it, and since then have put 13,000 hard miles of on and off road use on it. This is my first motorcycle, but I am a pretty good shadetree auto mechanic, and have synced the throttle bodies several times, removed the secondaries, replaced the suspension links, and a few other minor things.
I have an admittedly alterior motive here, as I would like to check my valves and adjust them if necessary. I also have a bit of an exhaust tick that I am having trouble pinpointing.
I have a nice oversized two car garage with metric wrenches and sockets. front and rear paddock stands, and a pretty well stocked toolbox, although I don't have any special tools which might be required for the valves.
What I am offering is a gathering of the area Stroms, with someone showing up that has done thier own valve check and can just be there to walk me through it. I will help anyone else with thier bike that might not be as mechanically inclined as myself, and I will provide food and beverages for lunch, and throughout the afternoon. If anyone else wants to bring food, drinks, atc. that would be fine. We have a 7-11 style hot dog roller, and I will have my grill going.
If there is indeed interest in this, I will look at setting a date.

I've never done the valves on the strom (06 bought in january with ~2400 miles now). I have done valve adjustments on a number of other vehicles (motorcycles, cars, boats) so I may be of some use.
Overall I'd be interested in a local strom gathering and a tech day. I want to rewire a few things that I threw on in the cold winter as well as install a Zumo and a few otherthings. I'm in Vienna, where in Nova are we talking about?

I did the valve check on my 1000 about 6 weeks ago along with all the fluid changes. I'd be happy to meet up for a tech day.Let me know when.

Well - I just paid the shop to do the valve adjustment, but wouldn't mind getting together for a tech day. If the schedule permits, I'm in.
Take care,
Bob S.

I'm in Winchester.
I figure it would give some of you a good reason to get out of the more crowded parts of NOVA. :p

I won't be able to make that date - I'll be scattering ashes at sea - my Father-in-laws last request.
Have fun all,

The valves on the 650-1000 engines are shim-under-bucket. The cams have to come out to CHANGE a shim, but just checking? Feeler gauges will do. I don't know what the specs are. I have done them before on older Kawasaki's and Suzuki's. You will see marks on the cam sprockets that have to be aligned at top dead center and there are corresponding marks on/in the head that have to be lined up before the cams come out. I make marks on the sprockets and the head to positively mark them. The bearing caps have to go back on the same as you removed them.
There is a *cup* (looks like a piston from a brake caliper only a lot thinner) that comes out. Then a little tiny shim, not quite as big as a dime but twice as thick comes out. Sometimes it sticks in there because of the oil (like a tooth in your jaw or being stuck in the mud). I use a small pick and gently try to pick it out or a very small magnet usually works. Look at the back of the shim and you will see a number on it. That is what your shim size is. (Tight valve=smaller shim//loose valve=bigger shim)
Have an assortment of sizes handy so the right size is on hand and can go right back in. Hope this helps.

I'm actually flying out on the 17th for a conference. Maybe its better if we push it back till July so more people can make it?

Not sure if there is any interest, but I'm on the list for the Yosh box, and should have it in a few weeks - if there are others around VA. that want to do a remap of their ECM, maybe we could roll all this into the tech day?
Let me know if there is any interest.

I am interested - I think the weekend of July 14/15 are booked but if I find out far enough in advance I could reschedule that weekend.
How does the Yosh Box upgrade and PCIII work together? Or are they mutually exclusive???

Chuck
The yosh box reprograms your ECU, the PCIII takes the ECU signal, and makes changes to the fuel mapping based on it.
So if you have a PCIII, you'll probably not need the yosh adjustment, since you can get to the same level of fuel mapping without it.
Take care,
Bob S.

The weekend of the 28th/29th is out for me - have a fireworks show to do (Camp Jeep).
All others look OK at this time. I have two people in front of me for the yosh box - I'll post when I have a firm date on that if anyone wants to do that either with or without the tech day.

I'm in VA Beach and am a new Wee owner. Would love to get together, W/E of the 28th works for me. Have a COG ride this weekend.
"Telstar" - Missed the question before! Was rained out on the 4th; only had 5 4"ers to tie in on the finaly when they called it at 7:30. At 9:30 when we were finished boxing everything back up it was nice - but the audience wasn't there.
Strings of 3" peanuts are a bitch to pull out of the HDPE racks; and re-naming the salutes "super crackling" made me think I had 4 cases of dragon eggs! We had a 21 gun salute to shoot, and I was getting worried when I couldn't find the titaniums.
Hope no one was hurt in the picture of the 8 & 10 inch racks, and good luck in the rest of your shows!

Hey 1.3,
We had a good 4th. Did a small show on the 30th, then delivered another show to a guy that didn't get his hazmat endorsement in time for the 4th.
Our show was 65 cases of product - and we all had a safe night. The weather was bad to our North - tornado watch, bad wind, some rain, but we came through without a drop.
Skydiver missed his dropzone and "almost" landed on the finale (he landed a good 50 yards away, but for a little while, he was right above it).
I'm glad it's over - thought I could rest a bit when I remembered Camp Jeep, if I heard right it's about a $30,000 show.
Sorry to hear you had to deal with "peanut" or "double-bubble" shells, I hate those - they just don't shoot right.
Yes - "super crackling" made me laugh when they told me what it really was, we set off a few car alarms with ours. :D
Take care & stay safe,
Bob S.
$15000 - 43 cases, including 18 cakes - 70 6" - 120 5" - 440 3" - ? 4" (rough count)

I don't have the paperwork here at work, but from memory...
$20,000 - 18 10"
36 8"
140 6"
160 5"
250 4"
240 3"
Add to that a opener of around 40 shells, including a 10", and a finale with almost 600 shells. The only cakes we had were 4, 36 shot in 4 second salute cakes. (love those things!! :D )
Take care,
Bob S.
Sounds like a little more bang for the buck in Virginia. Put 25,000 miles on a CB450 and 25,000 on a KZ900 when I was stationed in Norfolk in the mid 70's. Nice place to ride!
Incidentally, also have the grey '06 1K.

The company I work for gives a better show than most - usually 1/3 to 1/2 more than the other pyro companies.
I'm at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains (near Charlottesville), it's a great area for motorcycle bums! :D
Incidentally, also have the grey '06 1K.
Cool - come on down and we'll go ride the mountains. If you come down over the 4th of July, I can get you real good seats. ;)
Take care,
Bob S.

Yosh box should be here tomorrow, I'll be doing mine this week, into the weekend. Anyone wants to hook up, let me know - it will not be here long.
The only day booked solid right now is Sat. - big fireworks show! :)
Take care,
Bob S.
