Just an FYI for those riders in and around the West end of the Columbia River Gorge/I84. I know there are several V-Strommers in the Gresham/Sandy/Troutdale area.
I live in Troutdale and took a quick jaunt up to Multnomah Falls at about 7:30pm Saturday night. On the way back (west bound) I passed approximatly 12 deer spread out between the falls and the Corbett exit, feeding right on the shoulder. I have lived here most of my life and traveled this area countless times and can say that I have seen only an occasional deer in the area. This could be a resurgence of the columbia whitetail, or just some blacktail moving in. In any case just wanted to give a heads up that you might want to be a little more wary than usual when running that section of I84 especially early mornings and evenings. :D

Fatstrat:
Thanks for the heads up. There's a good chance we'll be coming through that area at dusk on our way back from Hell's Canyon. Will be watching for critters.

Let me know if you will be stopping in Troutdale to strech the legs, maybe I can get away for a cup of coffee.

Have a great ride and stay alert for deer that whole trip.

Thanks for the alert. I will be passing through that country on Friday morning, but may miss the majority as I am going over Hiway 26 from Madras to Gresham, on the way to Seaside for a wedding.

First LONG trip on the Vee, (longer than 250 miles in a day)

Oh. I do hate quartering head-on wind. Did that today, and also put up with stupid cagers.

there are some great sections of road between Madras and Gresham. Just a few tips from someone who could probably make it blind folded by now:D
DO NOT speed through Warm Springs. The reservation LEOs there are very nice guys but keep a sharp eye on traffic passing through. And if you can, make some time to ride into the Ka-Nee-Ta resort/casino. You will be treated to some great scenery, curvy roads (especially heading north/west out of the resort) and probably more than a few glimpses of wild horses. Once you hit the tree line to climb Mt. Hood stay on your toes. The road through there is average condition but has some fun turns, only problem is that there very few passing lanes on this winding mountain road and plenty of impatient drivers wanting to get around the multiple trucks...you get the point.
Also, gas up at the Safeway in Madras, especially if you have a club card and get the extra 3 cent a gallon discount. The single fuel stop between Warm Springs and Gresham will, ahem, rob you blind on their pump price.
Once you hit Gresham them follow the signs to I84 as Hwy26 essentially becomes Powell blvd and will bog down your forward progress big time.
And deer wont be the only critter to be watchful of through that area, last fall I saw a road killed cougar just after the tree line up out of Warm Springs.
Have a great ride. Let me know if you need any more tips for the trip through Portland and on to Seaside.:D
