In an effort to actually have a 6th gear I bought a 16 tooth front sprocket. I finally took the bike to the shop to have the sprocket replaced as I just could not get the dang thing off!

So here's the question. The sprocket the dealer sold me looked to be about 1/4 to 3/8 inch thick across the whole sprocket, envision a flat piece of steel. The sprocket that came off is huge compared to the old one, it must be 1/2 to 5/8's at the center where it mounts to the shaft and the teeth look to be easily 1.5 times wider than the new one.

For those of you who have done this mod is this typical of aftermarket sprockets and I have no worries or did I get the wrong sprocket from the dealer?

The bike seems to run OK but I swear I hear chain noise where I did not before.

Please let me know if I've done a farkle FU.

Thanks

a 6fiddy or a Vee? I beleive the sporckets are different. Stock on a Vee is 17 front 41 rear. I went with a 43 rear and love the change, 6th is much easier to manage now.

I've read threads about putting a 16 on the front and there doesn't seem to be any real issues.

My suggestion would be to relax, enjoy the ride, keep the chain lubed and watch the chain and sprokets for unusual wear.

I've got the after market 16 tooth on my 650. The factory sprocket has a rubber dampner attached and looks larger, but the teeth are the same width. Haven't noticed any extra noise though.

I switched to the 16 tooth front sprocket this spring (1,500 miles ago). The chain started to become a little loose, and I could definitely hear the noise at low speed. I tightened it to specs so I will get the chance tomorrow morning to see if that quieted it back down.

I did not hear any extra noise when the chain was snug.
