View Full Version : Good Houston Roads?
Hey y'all, we got this whole area to chat about Houston/Texas stuff. So, I thought I'd start a thread about some of your favorite rides.
I recently took up to the NW of town that was REALLY nice. I went up 290 to 6 to Navasota and took FM 3090 towards Carlos. I've noticed that road listed in a bunch of places and wasn't disappointed. This road was MADE for the V-Strom. It was so much fun, I turned around and did it again. Then I took 149 down to Mongomery and across the lake on FM 1097. Gorgeous scenery and a few cool sweepers.
Best ride I've had on my V-Strom.
Anyone have any others? My dealer (Richmond Suzuki) mentioned a road they called "Racer Road" out to the SW of town, but I haven't been able to find it. I'll probably ask them when I go in to get my ECU reprogrammed.
I also took the loop thru Galveston and across the ferry, but wasn't particularly impressed. The dolphins on the ferry were cool though.

Hi Brak, 3090 between Navasota and Carlos is a nice road, I've only seen better out in the Hill Country (FM337 is my favorite). Be careful on 3090, there was a guy killed there just last weekend, crossed the center line and slammed into an Escalade. Worse, the guys wife had dies 6 years earlier, now his two kids are orphaned. I think the problem with 3090 is there are no speed signs on the curves, and there's a gravel quarry out that way, spills on curves are common. Last time I went out that way a few months ago I got pulled over for speeding, he said they were watching the road carefully, but we were barely over the limit and just got a warning (my first encounter with a nice cop).
Another road out that way you should not miss is fm149 between Richards and Montgomery. Watch out for police when you get to the Montgomery side, you won't get off with a warning there! I'd say this is my second favorite road in that area. Honey Egypt used to be a great road, but the traffic and residential construction there has rendered it merely OK now.
There are some other good roads out that way, but those are our regulars.

Yeah, I'd noticed the thing about 3090 not having many speed signs for curves. And, the ones they DO have all say 15mph, which is a little excessive. I typically roll thru those at around 55. Vision is really the limiting factor on most of those stretches.
Good to know about the gravel, too.
Yeah, I've done 149, too. Great stuff.
Have you been a little further west? 390 is pretty cool and there are some really cool no-name roads, if you know where they are. Try the Two-Wheeled Texans forum for some VERY knowledgeable folks.
ride safe,

One of my favorite rides is leaving Houston Sunday AM (8:30 or so), 610 t0 I-10 to Brookshire (That was the boring part). Exit Brookshire, turn right then 352 to 1489 through San Felipe, back to I-10 for a mile , exit 36 to Bellville. Have cofee and Breakfast at Newmans and then you have lots of other choices Fayetteville, Somerville, etc, just depending on how long you want to ride.

Since you like to ride FM149 North outta montgomery, there are endless gravel roads once you get into Grimes County. Most of them are VERY lightley traveled, smooth, and very fun.You can almost make it to Texas World Speedway on gravel :D .Let me know if any of you want to do backroading some time I have a flexible work schedule and a new DL1K

Oh yeah, since we are talking about FM3090 which is a great road there is a place called Yankee's Tavern in Carlos just North of HWY30 that serves real good burgers.Mostly harleys but still cool.
