OK. Lets get this new thread started to help clear things up. April 14th at Big Bear is 100% confirmed and it looks like we have 8+ Strom riders meeting.

Plans.

Meeting starts at 9AM at Denny's.

Denny's
1185 E Rosewood Dr, San Bernardino, CA

http://www.gibbageart.com/files/map/meeting.jpg

Expect about 1 hour for food, and crewing the fat about this, that, and how many times we have dropped our bikes. Heading out around 10AM after some photo ops and ritual checking of other riders farkle.

Here is a basic map of the ride.

http://www.gibbageart.com/files/map/SB.jpg

We are very laid back, so no big rush. A lot of us will stop for fuel at the local station since the 1st leg is some distance with no gas from the base till the top. So you hungry Vee's should top it off ;)

Once we get into Big Bear we will stop again for another top-off for the Vee's. Its about 100 miles up hill, so you will be burning a lot. We can do a quick look around Big Bear lake or something (we will decide at the gas station) and head for the North Shore Cafe. Its a nice small diner in Fawnskin, and im sure the staff will be rather pleased to see a bunch of hungry bikers ;) Expect around 10-15$ for lunch. After that and more farkle inspection and tales of the twisties we just rode, we head out again for Lake Arrowhead along the 18.

It looks like there is a nice loop around the lake along the 173 and cut accross North Bay Road back into the 18. This will be my 1st time in Arrowhead. Once back onto the 18, we can hop into the 138 and head off of the Bear on the back side and hit the 15. From there, we can all salute and head out back too our normal lifes.

Weather. Expect 60's up in the Bear and 80's at Denny's since we are heading up early, before the vally starts to heat up. Ride the way you want. ATGATT is not inforced. I let both Darwin Merphy's Law enforce that ;)

There will be no planned off-roading, so no worries about getting your bikes dirty!

Again, this is just a casual ride with friends. A time to get togeather, enjoy a ride, and see some sights most people miss in a cage. Please, no show-boating knee-draggers. If you wanna do that, you should of gotten an SV, not a DL ;) We will try and keep a comfortable pace for new riders, if not a little on the aggressive side. With traffic, I doubt we could open the throttle much anyways. These roads are rather popular for cagers and chrome plated cruisers.

If there are any questions or comments, feel free to ask. Also, if someone would like to add there own knoleg to the route, please do so! If this is your first group ride, please ask questions. I will try and work up a little tips post for new group riders since I think we have a few.

With all that said, let the good times roll!

Just some tips for new riders. I myself am a new rider, so PLEASE add your own tips, or correct me if I am wrong.

#1. Never ride side-by-side. Always ride in a staggered formation! Its dangerous to ride side-by-side and ILLEGAL in California. This is an example of staggered formation

#2. The most experanced rider is typically lead. He sets the pace, and warns of hazzards on the road. The newest riders are in the middle, with some experanced riders bringing up the rear to keep an eye on the newbies.

#3. Signals. Riders will signal a warning with there foot out for debris in the road or hazzard. If its on the left side, the rider will stick his left foot out, and so on. Also, do the same for people behind you. If you see someone tap there helmet or give you a "slow down" sine by pumping there hand up and down, that means there is a cop in the area.

#4. There are a lot of passing lanes on this loop, so be ready to pass slow cars!!! You get plenty of warning, but we need to be on the ball with a group this large. In a group, try to never pass a vehicle without a passing lane.

#5. In a turn, loosen up the formation. If someone goes down (god forbid), DONT watch him! Its called target fixation. If you watch him, you will go down with him. Finish the turn, and then turn back to help him. The lead may not see this right away and contenue on to the next stopping point, or turn around if he notices and head back.

#6. We will have a few designated stops along the way. If you get seperated (slow down, have to pee, whatever), meet us at the next stop point. We will wait till all heads are counted. We will also have a few cell phones on us in case someone gets lost.

#7. Dont try to spit when your wearing a full face helmet. It just wont work. Same for pickin your knose. If your riding a flip up or half helmet, dont spit if someone is riding behind you ;) Its just not cool.

So please. Feel free to add your own tips.

Thanks for the rider formation info! It's all new to me!

So which way are we headed up the mtn? I'm very familiar with the 330 and the 18 in a cage. The 18 will have more cages, the 330 more tight turns.

Also, taking the 15 is not advisable if there is any chance of wind. Gusts of 100mph+ are not uncommon in the area near devore and CSUSB. I go to school there, and the campus seems to get shut down at least once per quarter due to hazardous (100mph+) wind.

I was thinking about taking the canyon road down to Beaumont and then taking 38 up. That way we head come around the back side later in the day.

I agree with the 38 1st.

FYI- Heads up... it's going to be cold in Big Bear on Saturday (early)---

Shady areas especially while riding.

Mid 40s, to mid 50s expected until about noon, high of 60s.

Based on that people should bring/carry/and or wear cold weather gear. It may be 70s/80s in the valley, but it will be a tad cool up top.

If you've already zipped out your cold weather liner from your jackets (like I have), you might want to remember to pack that liner just in case.

Good tip. You can always cool down, heating up is the hard part. Although there's little chance of us getting there early.

I have an extra set of 2X Joe Rocket Alter Ego. Multi season (liner and zip off cover that exposes vents in the jacket and pants) and some cold weather gauntlet gloves if anyone needs some warmer stuff. Field tested through the winter in the NW.

Let me know and I will pack it up there.

One more question, I am pretty used to poor weather riding (read pissing rain and wind)... If there were to be some weather in the morning would some folks still turn out at Denny's at least to tell us that the ride was off?

Looking forward to meeting you all in the morning!

I dont see ANYTHING too worrie about on the forcast. I will be there no matter what, and I am sure Jerry will also. The only thing I see is 15-20MPH winds, and I rode in the 30-40 winds yesterday with no problem.

*WEATHER UPDATE*

They are predicting winds for Saturday with a wind advisery for the hills. Weather.com says 20-30MPH from N/NW.

Im still riding. I just wanted to give you guys an update. Its something to consider. I say come out too Denny's and chat it up. Once we are done, check the winds and judge for yourself.

Another update

Hi all,

I just arrived in San Bernardino. 215 is a mess from March Air Force Base north. Construction, narrow chutes with concrete barriers on either said, rough surface with chuck holes. I'd take 15 and ride a few more miles on 10.

I have a backway that we are using outta Temecula-- avoids that entire area-- direct to Dennys.

Should be there 9 am sharp.

Can anyone give me the street names for the section of highway we followed that was south of I-10?

Jblk9695
04-24-2007, 10:02 PM
We went down Anderson (Tippecanoe north of the 10) south to Barton Rd and then east to San Timoteo Canyon, from there we went to Live Oak Canyon Rd., that was were we stopped in the dirt. Then north east on Live Oak to the 10 again, Live Oak changes to Oak Glen Canyon north of the 10.
Hope this is what you were after:D

That's exactly what I was looking for. Can I plot this path using mapquest or google earth?

Jblk9695

Sort of, I tried it by just entering the street names and it plotted Barton Rd to Live Oak Canyon but only about half way to the 10 frwy. I also tried it by just drawing a line manually and this worked ok, just magnify it so you can stay on the road or you'll be in the dirt again:mrgreen:
Best is to just fiddle around with the different functions and see what happens:cool:
I was using google maps.
