Since it was a PERFECT day for a ride, I decided to take the Wee for a spin Sunday. From Sherwood, I went through Newberg to Carlton, then followed the Nestucca River, explored some logging roads, and went on to Beaver, then to Cape Lookout St Park.

West of Carlton:

Bridge along the Nestucca River:

Where the REAL fun starts:

Followed a logging road off Nestucca River Rd:

I followed that road for several miles, as it began to look less like a road and more like a trail. The stock tires are great on gravel, but not so good on mud:

No damage, fortunately, but I think some crashbars might be a good idea. I'll have to go back with the KLR one of these days...

I went back down the mountain (much harder on gravel than going UP the mountain), and got back on Nestucca River Rd. The middle section of the route between Carlton and Beaver is a few miles of gravel; the rest is many miles of nice, curvy pavement. Sorry, no pics of that--I was having too much fun to stop!

After I hit Hwy 101 at Beaver, I went up to Cape Lookout St Park:

From there, I took 101 down to Otis, and then back to Sherwood via McMinnville & Newberg. What a great ride!

Fantastic! I was wishing I could ride that day, glad to look at your photos at least.
Hope we get the chance to ride again this summer.
Are you open to a camping trip?

Great ride and pics. You need to plan one of the Breakfast Club rides.

Thanks for the pictures and report, looks nice and I hope you'll get more of the same weather breaks at the right times. Here in the greater DFW megacity area we're waiting for a few storms to roll through the next two days.

Hmmm...I'm kind of a camping 'noob', but I've been thinking about picking up some camping gear sometime this summer. It's a possibility...

weekend camping trip this summer? Easy, like up on the Clackamas River?

Another quick and easy trip is over Mt. Hood, down 48 to Rock Creek Reservoir. Great curves, very little traffic, and it's drier at your destination. Plus you can fish there, if you took along a pole and tackle. There's gas and food (both grocery and restaurant) in Wamic, just a few miles down the road.

That is a beatiful route, it can be very warm there though, but you did mention fishing! Was up there last year trying to bash my way through to Badger Lake on the side of Mt Hood. Didn't make it, got stuck in a snow bank!!!:(

Badger Lake seems to be an elusive lake to reach, unless you have a helicopter or at the very least a four-wheel drive with a winch and chainsaw. A KLR might be able to do it mid-summer when any snow drifts are gone from the few roads into it.

I've been to Badger in my 4wd, but i don't know that a stock VStrom is the right vehicle to get there. The first few miles of Barlow road are fine and rolling if dry, but there is some pretty bumpy gnarly stuff before you get there. The right tires, and some patience probably gets a Strom there.

There are so many roads up on the mountain that our bikes can play on though. No reason to push it unless you've had some practice. Which i haven't!

I am pretty sure that is a Pelican case.

It's a Caribou case, which is really just a Pelican 1550 with a lock added to it:

I just bought the box by itself and mounted it permanently, but they do offer it with a locking quick-release mount for the Strom as well:

I'm probably going to add the side cases this summer:
