Firstly I admit that this could probably be posted elsewhere but I thought what the heck, ask the locals first.

Had a small problem with the bike (Weestrom) yesterday and wondering if anyone has experienced a similar situation.

Basically had been riding all day and had no problems starting nor any indication of a drained battery but after stopping for a drink which developed into a chinwag yesterday, the bike would not restart.

Basically, just prior to this stop point (was Robertson Pieshop) I had come across a causeway and threw a bit of water up, nothing to drastic though. Fort he next few kays until the stop there was no indication of any issues and the clock etc kept functioning.

So, after the stop (around and hour) I put the key in, turned it on and noticed no bells and whistles as the motor 'set itself'. Tried to start, nothing, just the 'tick, tick, tick of the starter'.

Ok, engine off, check everything, all looks good, try again, same problem and which point I notice the clock is reading 1:07am (time was near 4:30pm) so obviously there was an issue with power.

Left for 5 minutes and tried again. This time got the engine check but not enough power to start. Headlights were very dim and blinkers poor.

Eventually the bike was push started and I got it home ok but still was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to teh cause given that this is the second time it has occurred (the first after a wash).

The battery is 4 months old.

I am guessing that water is getting somewhere it shouldn't as the sympton appears to be a battery failure but when started this afternoon it starts first push. I am wondering if others have had similar issues.

Thanks, all help appreciated

I would make sure the battery terminals are tight first. After that, I'd suspect the battery. It's not an Oz specific situation so the general forum would have been a better choice.

Ta, have now posted in the DL650 forum.

I have posted a few places and a few people have responded that they have had 'similar' issues with the DL/SV650 range so have feelers out looking for something specific.

Once started, the bike runs as normal and the battery does appear to hold charge but will now leave the bike for a few days and check again.

So is the battery actually being charged by the alternator?

That is one of the paths I was following but I have no idea of how to test it (ie. method, tools etc) as it reminds me of a problem a mate had with his car but in that case it was an auto and we could not push start it to check (ended up being a stuffed alternator).

In my bike's case it only did 1500kms in 20 months with the rpevious owner and really only about 300kms in the last 6 months. Since I bought it I ride it to places the previous owner only dreams of and I have done over 7500kms in 4 months so is it possible the alternator could be screwed?

May need to figure out out to check for a charge (ideas welcomed greatly).

Chris, a cheap meter and a test light are great to have in the tool box. These two items can take a lot of guess work out of the equation and are a must if you add any powered farkles.

New DL650.. 2 weeks and couldn't be happier!

but I had this problem too... turns out that if you turn the key too far it puts the rear "park" light on... drains battery nice an quick.

Why do bikes have park lights anyway???

Been there, done that and got the flat battery to prove it.

Only wish the problem I posted about was caused by that issue but I have a gut feel that water got somewhere it wasn't supposed to be as it hasn't happenned since but still working through things.

Its probably a bad earth connection ( -ve side of battery ). It could be at the battery ,bad cripping on connection etc,
