Just ordered a fork brace, kickstand foot, peg lowering kit and mirror extenders from Adv Tech.

The problem is that I am much too often enticed by dirt roads that (usually) go to nowhere. These roads all too often turn into 4wd roads, but unfortunately, since I am sure that my pot of gold lies just beyond the next rise, I invariably continue. This would not be much of a problem except that I am kind of an uncoordinated spaz and often end up dropping my steed.

:green_lol: :yesnod: :green_lol:

Thus far, my HB crash thingies have kept my mirrors reflective. Am I asking for trouble by hanging them out a bit further?

I have a 2012 dl650 vStrom (5'10" 240 lbs). I have no problems w/buffeting, but it seems very loud in the cockpit at freeway speeds (nearly all from wind noise). I have to set my music player (Droid Razr Maxx) at full volume to hear the music decently at highway speed. I want to reduce the wind noise as much as possible so that I don't have to turn up my music as loud and to save my ears.

I have assumed that there are only 3 ways to get more peace and quiet in the cockpit.
1. Deaden the noise at the ear w/ear plugs or head phones.
2. Deaden the noise by getting a qieter helmet.
3. Wind jammer full neck gaitor, helmet skirt. Head - | Knee Support | Back Support | Face Masks - from Proline-sports.co.uk
4. Change the windshield set up to something that offers stiller air round the ears.

I have tried a helmet (different flip face) with a small wind gator on the chin, it is only a tiny bit more quiet. I put some foam padding in the ear channels and it was no more quiet, but became less comfortable. I don't want to give up the convenience of a flip face. Anyways, I get the impression various helmets only make a tiny difference.

I use Sony MDR-NC13 Noise-Canceling In-Ear Stereo Headphones for music and to reduce noise. The noise reduction ear buds do a great job with bass frequencies, but not as well with highs. It dulls up my motor a lot but I think they do not help as much with wind noise. I once read about an ear bud passive noise reduction headphones and the guy said that he barely had to turn up his player to hear, but now I can find the post. Anyone know of a good in ear headphone set that cuts way back on wind noise? Are the Costco modeled ear pads the way to go? I don't want to ride w/o music, so a ear plug only system is not a solution for me.

The Windjammer helmet skirt seems like PITA to use with a modular helmet and seems very hot in summer. Thoughts?

Finally, comes the idea of a new windshield. I have tested all 3 stock wind shield heights and they all seem basically the same. A new wind sheild set up will likely cost around $300, $100 for a Madstad bracket and $200 or more for a screen. I am not opposed to spending this much, but would like to be sure that it accomplishes something pretty dramatic as far as wind noise reduction. Frankly, I find windshields to be quite baffling. One person will claim that a wind screen is perfectly quiet, while another (often the same size) individual will find it to be a perfect hurricane. It seems that once installed, a windscreen cannot be returned so you can end up stuck with it and no improvement. I cant afford to go trial and error thru 5 or 6 windscreens.

Suggestions?

Tires for Alaska trip

I'm not here to ask about tire brands and all that. I already have the tires.

Currently on my bike is a half worn rear tire. The center of the tread is down about half way. The edges are nearly full as I rode a lot of highway miles on my last trip.

I probably have 8000 to 9000km's on this tire now.

I am heading up to Alaska on 10th of July. Round trip is around 8000km. I'm thinking I will be pretty much riding on a bald tire on my return.

I have a new tire arriving tomorrow to install, but was thinking maybe I should strap it to the bike instead, and then ride my current tire down a ways, and maybe find someplace to swap out the tire in Whitehorse or Anchorage AK.

The other option is to just swap it out now and keep the old tire to put back on the bike when the new one is done. I already have a tire plug kit.

Tires have a limited lifetime in terms of years, so maybe it makes more sense to pack the new tire for install later?

What would you guys do?

Alaska Bound! Good news and Bad news ….

The Good News: :-) A friend and I are setting off from Virginia to Anchorage, Alaska the first week in July, him on a 1300 cc V-Star, and me on a 1000 cc V-Strom. We’re planning on about 20 days on the road, weather, bikes and bodies cooperating, traveling west from Virginia, then shoot up across the plains to the Bad Lands, Mount Rushmore, and then crossing the border after riding the Glacier National Park Highway to the Sun. We’ll connect with the ALCAN and trek across Canada crossing into Alaska north of Beaver Creek. Should be an awesome ride!
The Bad News: :-( I figure nearly 6,000 miles is about all this sorry old butt can take, and though I hate to do it, I’ve decided to part ways with the trusty V-Strom in Anchorage, wimp out, and fly home.
So, fellow Strom Troopers – I come to you for help regarding,
1.	Recommendations of do’s and don’ts in planning and executing this trip, and
2.	Any help or advice, especially from our Alaska brethren, regarding selling the V-Strom in Anchorage.
The bike is a 2006 DL1000 with 18,000 miles on it (about 24,000 by the time it gets to Anchorage). I recently had it professionally checked out, tuned up, and all the fluids and filters changed in preparation for the trip. Some key extras include: Removable hard saddlebags and top trunk, Engine Guards, K&N Air Filter, Large windshield and heated grip, plus lots more. Unfortunately I apparently do not have enough posts to post it for sale in the forum, but will be listing it on Craig’s List in Anchorage. If anyone knows a trusted dealer I could leave it with on consignment in Anchorage, or anyone that might be interested in buying it, please let me know. Or maybe someone that wants to fly up, and drive it back?
I’ll be happy to send pictures. BTW I’ll have camping gear for sale as well …

I just completed the Fuel filter bypass mod on my recently acquired 04 Wee. The fuel system was only putting out 110 ml in 10 seconds so it was quite clogged. WOW - what a difference! Now I see why everyone raves about this engine.

I followed the the excellent VSRI instructions and the only difference is that my 04 has the engine fuel line running on the left side of the bike but the write-up showed running the new filter on the right side of the bike. To make everything fit, I'd rather have a smaller diameter filter. I used a NAPA gold 333023 which has a diameter of 2.25 in / 57mm.

I when I searched this forum I found a reference to Ryco Z200, but it looks to be just a bit smaller (appx 2" dia.) than the NAPA filter I used. Does anyone use a smaller diameter filter?

Hello,
Back on a V-Strom 1000 for the first time in 4 years. I picked up a new 2012 to replace my tired 07' ST1300. So, by the title of the thread you can presume what I am about to ask. Progressive, without any explanation reason or support, increased my insurance premium from my sport touring bike an additional $350 per year! No change in coverage. When I sold my 2005 DL1000 in 09, I was paying less than $300.00 per year!!!

$850.00 per year with clean credit and zero infractions?? Did I miss something?
