Default Spring 2013 - Romney, West Virginia - May 3-5

Romney Cycles is doing it again. The date has been confirmed and they will be holding the “2nd Annual Camp N Ride” on May 3-5, 2013.

Romney is a huge Suzuki/Yamaha/Kawasaki dealership. It's the dealership where I purchased both of my Teneres, and is one of the largest dealerships in the country. They like to be a leader in the industry and they are very interested in increasing their involvement in the Adventure market. These guys go out of their way to be customer friendly. Back in May they hosted their first Adventure weekend. We had one Strom at that event, but there's plenty of room for more. All bikes are welcome, but the group rides will include off pavement riding. Link to 2012 event . . video

When: May 3-5, 2013
Where: Romney Cycles in Romney, WV
What: Camping on the grounds of the dealership, or staying at local lodging. Then riding some fantastic West Virginia roads.

During our inaugural event everyone arrived late on Friday afternoon. We did a group ride on Saturday, and everyone headed their own way on Sunday. The dealership provided the camping area in a nice field next to the dealership, portable toilets, a shower, started a fire each evening, and they fed us on Saturday evening. They also worked out a group rate at one of the local motels. They want to make 2013 bigger and better so if you have any ideas please share them here, they are open to suggestions.

For the non-campers
Koolwink Motel
South Branch Inn
We had a rider stay at Koolwink last time. He seemed pretty happy with it. I also believe that's the one that will have a group rate.

For 2013 we will have a group ride or two. If we need more than one group ride we'll try to have one more dirt oriented than the other. I'll lead the dirtier one. If you're not interested in a group ride there are endless opportunities for you to explore on your own.

Romney is centrally located to a lot of great riding. If you do want to explore on your own here's a few ideas along with the approximate mileage from Romney.
65 miles Rt 72 . . video
83 miles Spruce Knob
54 miles Dolly Sods
16 miles Oldtown Low Water Bridge . . video
57 miles Black Water Falls
62 miles Seneca Rocks
52 miles WV/VA Border Crossing near Mathias, WV
74 miles Harpers Ferry . . video

If you want to bring your significant other, but they don't want to do a day ride with a bunch of sweaty guys, the scenic train is less than a mile from the dealer.
Scenic Railroad

Romney Cycles will want a ballpark figure on how many to plan for, but obviously it's way too early for anyone to commit this far in the future. When time gets closer I'll try to get a headcount. But until then post up if you think you may attend, have any suggestions or questions.

So mark your calendars and plan to start your early spring season in beautiful West Virginia.

This following is not an obligation, more of a way to see how many and who may be coming. Post to this thread or send me a PM and I'll add/remove you from the list. When we're a few weeks out we'll try to get a more official headcount so Romney can make their plans.

Possible headcount from Trooper

Stromin' Nroman

Additional headcount from other adventure boards (Super Tenere & ADV): 15

Jon,

Sounds cool. It's a little early for an ironclad commitment, but I like West Virginia.

Do they do test rides?

I'm going to start an informal headcount on the first post of this thread. It's not an obligation, just an idea of how many and who may be coming.

Norm, I agree it's too early for anyone to make a firm commitment, but wanted to make people aware so they could put it on their planning calendar. We had a good time last year and I even camped. That's a pretty big deal for me. We didn't have a big number last year, but I suspect it will grow a good amount in 2013. Should I add you to my informal count?

Romney is one of the places I first test rode a Tenere. Of course that was with a Yamaha factory truck bringing in bikes. Romney is big enough that I believe all the factories take their test ride trucks there. But if a factory truck is not there I don't believe they do test rides.

I'm sure Yamaha USA would do that for me.
This would be the perfect occasion to gin up interest in the Super Tanqueray.

I should really test some of the Triumphs, too.
The local dealer does that, usually by appointment.

I can test ride any Harley I want at a local dealer, too.
And I have.

So now I ride a Suzuki.

Excellent, master...done.

I'll ask Romney if there's any chance of getting some test bikes. I'm going to guess no. They've already learned that we Adventure riders tend to ride and not hang around during daylight hours too much. Counting on us to limit riding the good roads around there to stick around and wait our turn for a guided test ride might not seem credible. If I'm wrong, I'll let you know.

Looks like I've lost the ability update the original thread. Had a couple more additions from the Tenere site, so thought I'd update the headcount numbers here.

We're pushing 30 possible attendees between the three boards, but not many Troopers yet.

Thought I'd keep everyone up to speed on the plans.

So far the plan is for two different group rides on Saturday. One Tenere guy will be leading a pavement oriented ride highlighting some of the great roads around the area. There's a lot of good twisty stuff around there. I don't believe he's planning any dirt. I'll be leading a dirt road oriented ride. All roads will be legal state roads, but not necessarily ones that see much if any maintenance. Roads will not be overly difficult, but could have some occasional minor rocky sections, mud puddles, minor water crossings, gravel, up and down switchbacks, and other features that can be easily traversed by a jeep.

Now that you're about to flip the page on your 2013 calendar this is a reminder to pencil in a weekend in WV.
