For all of Greywolf's genius and contributions to the V-Strom community (Thank you! :var_14, he also "blessed" us with that oh-so-manly moniker the "Glee".:mod2_wub:
But even geniuses have an occasional brain fart (Take the genius at Suzuki who named the "Gladius"!)
For the uninitiated: Glee=Gladius+Wee (Because the Gen 2 was based on the Gladius motor)
But according to Suzuki, the Gen 3 6Fiddy uses a new motor with "fresh SV650 engineering". It is NOT a Gladius motor and therefore can NOT be a "Glee".
Let the nickname nominations for the Gen 3 DL650 begin...

I remember being excited in 2012. I was happy to see the changes and set up my new bike for the long distance touring that had been my focus for years. I wanted a fun short name, anything other than sticking a 2 on the old models.
My body didn't cooperate though. Riding became a chore. Now I have no desire to ride, much less get a new bike, much less something that looks like a crosseyed woodpecker with a questionable visual impact approaching left turners. I can only hope people get the idea they need to report size and year when asking a question and the need for short names can go away. I may just do V123 and W123. This whole new models thing just feels like work right now.
This is complicated. If I understand things correctly Suzuki is going to still make the "Glee" (yuk name IMO, but useful) non beaked version. All the new 2017 DL650 are varieties of second generation DL650s. Basically flavors of the Wee2 (now there is a noble instantly understandable moniker). In most technical conversations people will only need to know if someone is talking about a Wee1 or Wee2. Conversations about spoked wheels and beaks are usually not that frequent and don't get too deep.
Seems to me like Wee2 will suffice and when necessary someone can say Wee2-adv, or what ever adder comes out until there is a substantive change like between 2011 and 2012.
Just read another press release. It looks like there are enough differences to differentiate it from the Wee2 and they are not going to continue the older non-beaked body style at the same time. At least according to that article.
I'm never sure why this is an issue with people. It's not like "Glee" is emblazoned on the side of the bike in big bold letters; you aren't compelled to call it a Glee. I think that nickname was coined simply so it could be easily differentiated from the other years when writing about it on this particular forum. No one is making you call it that. I respect the hell out of Greywolf and his knowledge, but you aren't obligated to call your bike by a particular nickname simply because he coined the term as a form of shorthand on here.
I never called mine a Glee when I owned it. Hell, I always thought the nickname that seemed acceptable to most everyone, the Wee, sounded flat out silly too. If you don't like Glee, it seems fairly simple to call it a '12 DL650 (or '13, or '14, or whatever) when you're typing a post. That means typing four extra characters when you're referring to the bike. Typing four extra letters isn't like hauling block up a flight of stairs; it doesn't really require a lot of effort. And now, with three different generations of the DL650 and two of the DL1000, with multiple years in each generation, it seems like typing '12 650, or '14 1000, is actually easier. If someone asks you in person what your bike is called, do you actually say it's a Wee? I think that would embarrass me as much as saying "Glee".
Or am I missing the point here, and this is just one of those topics that people enjoy grinding about, kind of like a "wave" thread, or an "I hate Harleys" thread? If so, then I offer a mea culpa, and withdraw back into the shadows.....>
Maybe the DL1000 should be called "The Big Wee"....but that could lead to some misunderstandings if you told someone you were riding "The Big Wee". Though, upon second thought, it might lead to you making some new friends.
To me it's a [Year] V-Strom 650. The Wee/Glee shorthand in practice has been minimally helpful outside of conversations with a half-dozen people in the entire planet.
You know this is all really funny, but I have always had this beef about MC forums. I think that signing up, as part of this it should be mandatory to list what your bike is/year model, for all to see. That would make answering any questions that you might have much easier to say the least. :yesnod::yesnod:
And when some hot chick asks me what bike I have, I wouldn't have to say it's a wee wee. :laugh2:
On this forum, I personally prefer "YEAR TYPE", e.g. 2016 650, 2016 DL650, '16 650, '16 DL650. Everywhere else, on the Internet or in real live, I use "YEAR V-Strom TYPE". Simple and easy. No need for a nickname cheatsheet just to decode what version of V-Strom we're talking about.
But I'm new here, so my opinion doesn't matter
