Recommended means John Weldon cut it apart and liked what he saw. He has not checked all makes.
As for being the same filter as for the 2011 and earlier DL650, it looks like it is. The aftermarket ones are the same part anyway (e.g., KN-138 or KN-138C for the K&N filter) even if the Suzuki OEM one isn't for some reason.
I'm wondering if anyone has had a rock or other debris knock a hole in the oil filter. Put a Shinko 705 on front and been riding off road a bit more lately and the filter is pretty dinged up.
It has happened. One Glee rider even had a piece of road debris hole the filter and the heat exchanger behind the filter. Some people have won lotteries too but none of those things are likely occurrences.
