meter select switch function ?

Rode my new bike round trip to work today (46 mi r/t) for the first time. Below freezing and noticed no freeze symbol nor thermometer.
Checked the manual, and the meter select switch is mentioned in two places: one to switch between the odometer, two trip meters, and display brightness. That's what pushing the switch this morning did.
The second place in the manual is to switch between the clock (displayed) and the ambient thermometer (not yet seen).
What I don't see is any mention of how to choose which function is being controlled by the switch.

Also, dealer apparently installed the heated grips improperly -- on the highest setting could barely tell any heat at all was being generated, when I expect (and according to the manual) they should be too hot to touch with the bare hand.

The temperature/time display is cycled by holding the meter switch in for 4 seconds. The freeze warning should show up regardless of that selection below 38F and turn the temp display on when it first shows up.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014+ DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012+ DL650s
