I have had my 2012 DL650 Adventure for about 5 weeks and almost 3000 miles. So far I must say I am very happy with this bike. I agree the locks on the panniers are junk. And graphite is messy. Suzuki did not design these locks or bags though. I blame Trax. I have taken to leaving the bags at home unless I need them for a specific reason. I have a Givi trunk and that handles most of my storage needs on a daily basis. I ride my bike to work, so I need to be able to store a jacket, overpants, rain gear, a spare face shield, and a few other odds and ends. I dislike the Trax bags and it makes me wonder if I would not have been better off to get the regulare DL650 and then add my own bags - I had Happy Trails on my DL1000 and they were great. I may eventually retire these bags and add something else... Again, I don't blame Suzuki for the locks or bags.
As for the seat, I think it is pretty good. No complaints here. The windshield with the little spoiler works great. Suspension is compliant.
Before buying the DL650, I set out to buy an NC700X DCT/ABS model. I test rode it, and liked it, but I did not like the seat on it, I thought the pegs were too high, and the suspension seemed like it was pretty cheap. Then when you add in the cost of Honda's accessories.... I decided to go look at the V-Strom. I took it for a test ride and fell in love.
I really would have like to have the DCT transmission, though. I hope Suzuki is working on developing something like that.
