Not sure what year my bike is

I recently bought my brand new 2015 (w/5 miles) a few days ago and it's all so new to me. The dealer said it's a 2015 but looking at photos doesn't the 2015 have a different front under the headlight? My photos show the paper plate shows 2015. There a sticker on the side with the VIN and other info that says "MFD in:06/14"
Red is 2014 Blue is 2015

I'm more curious than anything and also to get them to correct the info and I can update my insurance if needed. No matter what it was a 5 mile bike when I picked it up.

...or maybe I just have a lot to learn.

Only the XT model, and it also has spoke wheels.

The "MFD in:06/14" on the side of the motorcycle is what has me confused.

Thanks for the response.

I'm not sure how it started, but mfg's are allowed to call a vehicle like yours actually built in 2014 to be titled as a 2015 model. RV's are even worse since the title can even be two or three years newer than the chassis the thing was built on.

My 2012 was mfg'd in 9/11 and I've seen up to 1/XX of the current year.

I think the serial number or VIN numbers would tell you if it's a certain model year.

I wouldn't get too concerned about it.

06/14 is earlier than I thought '15s would start being built. I guess the usual tooling up interval in a model change would be practically non existent since the only change would be color. In 2012, the model year had big changes from 2011 models and had a second run extending into July because of a higher demand than expected. Since blue was a 2015 color and not available in 2014, it's definitely a 2015 model year. If it was white, it would be harder to be sure because of color. Dealers work off the paperwork from the manufacturer. It would be pretty hard to get a title with the wrong year.

In some countries, notably the UK and British commonwealth countries except for Canada, model year doesn't seem to be part of the paperwork. Instead, Suzuki's build designation for the model year is the important thing to look for. Your bike would carry an L5 designation instead of an L4. Model year, build year and registration year are not always the same.

See What does the 'K' or "L" mean in my bikes designation?

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014+ DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012+ DL650s

Did you get an owners manual with it?

Mine has part # 99011-11j60-03a on it with April 2011 and an L2 on the back cover.

The vehicle emissions tag on the bike says it conforms to 2012 emissions standards too.

I found a web site that you enter your VIN and it tells you what you have and it came back as 2015 Suzuki DL650A.

Same part number May 2014.

Side note, I've now broken out of the "you need 10 posts" jail cell.

Two VIN decoder sites are VIN Decoder - Motorcycle Identification - Cyclepedia and JS1RL41A000501535 - Suzuki - - VIN-Decoder.NET

The tenth digit in a USA Suzuki VIN number can be used to find the year. See Suzuki Model Year Codes and VIN | Steve's Blog

for example:
2014 - E
2015 - F
