Sorry, I have been away for a few months. (Moving out and starting a divorce.)

Anyway, this summer I was searching for luggage options. I've decided to replace my soft bags with a SW Mototech quick-detach rack with Pelican cases. I was looking at 1450s. I don't want/need tons of room - but I do want 'enough.' There was also a thread about liners for these cases.

Any advice?

 

I lucked into a couple of bags which fit nicely into my 1550's included with some cheap roller luggage from Wally World.

You might take your dimensions shopping if Pelican doesn't offer something specific.

a 1550 will fit *most* large pizza boxes. i have found that sometimes i have to crunch the box to clear the lock.

here's a pic...i have 1550s for the side's, too, but they were in the condo for this ride.

Get the 1550's. The scale is perfect on the wee. 1450's are a little on the small side. I bolted the 1550's directly to the new version sw-motech quick detach racks. I also purchased the optional quick release hardware and key locks, but that setup required relocating the turn signals. Decided against that option because it looks like crappy "afterthought" engineering. The brackets can still be removed very quickly with the 4 zeus fasteners. The slight downward angle of the cases allows plenty of room for passenger's feet. I bought the givi T468 liners (perfect fit) which make packing and removing your gear a snap.

you sure can. maybe even 3 of them. i know i can fit 2 gallons of motor oil or antifreeze. i bet i could fit three of the coolant but i haven't actually tried.

last and only time I put a pizza in a top box, it looked more like a half eaten calzone by the time I got home

much easier to balance the pizza on the tank as you ride, make sure they tape the box closed and keep the side that opens facing you, the oppisit way, the wind tends to try opening the box, works real well, box may slide and bump your forearms when leaning in corners, large pizza is easier to carry than small, cause it doesn't have as far to slide between your forearms

you can fit a medium size watermellon in a 1550, when grocery shopping my rule of thumb is one layer completely covering the bottom of the shopping cart with nothing stacked will fit into 2 1550's

Thanks, that's the kind of info I was looking for. Great pics. I found a deal on Givi rack and am looking into the Caribou system for it.

Pelican 1550s are the way to go.

You can pack quite a bit into them.

Off of the bike, the cases can act as coolers:


BUT!!!! Here is a important note; mount the cases up as high as you can on your SW-Motech racks. If you don't, you will go down during aggressive cornering. Mine are mounted as high as I could get them and I still nicked the forward, lower corner of the case on some of the turns I made. I noticed one rider, in a previous post. who has quite a bit of case "hanging down" below the racks. I would rip those off of the bike in a heartbeat; or go down.

[Final note, I no longer use Pelican cases for side luggage. I don't use any side luggage cases at all. All of my gear packs into two dry bags strapped to my passenger seat area and I swapped out my 1450 case for one of my 1550 sidecases which acts as my topcase now. A much better setup for the riding that I do.]
