How many gallons does the tank hold??

How large exactly is the gas tank on a 2006 DL650? I thought that I've read that it is 5.8 gallons but the other day it was on the flashing empty where the middle of the icon had gone white. It only took 4.3 gallons to fill it to the bottom of the neck. Does it really still have over another gallon at that point? Should I be filling it higher than the bottom of the neck?

On a side note we just bought Givi TN532 Engine Guards and I installed them (not hard) and a few days later we were at a local lake on a gravel road and stopped. Dottie got off and I didn't have the kickstand down and as she finished getting off I dropped the bike. No damage, except for a few scratches on the crash bar on that side. I was real happy that I had put them on . Also from here on out anytime she is getting on/off the kickstand will be down.

I'm 73 and not as strong as I'd like to be and with the both of us on the bike and our side bags filled along with the back bag I haven't felt real secure when at a stop. The bike seems top heavy and I wanted a better stance with my feet further apart. I put Soupy's adjustable lowering links on the bike, lowering the bike 3/4" in the back and for now left the front alone. I feel better now with a little wider stance while stopped.

I'd recommend the Givi crash gaurds and the lowering links as both were pretty easy/fast to install and for me have made the bike better,

Mine always flashes early the most I've ever put in it was 5.2 and it was flashing for almost 100 miles. I plan on taking a gas can with me one of these days and seeing just how far a tank goes and what it really holds.

The published capacity is 22 liters or 5.8 US gallons.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014+ DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012+ DL650s

Going on memory here, but I think it starts flashing when there is 1 1/2 gal left, then the flash changes when you are down to 1 gallon. And...when it runs out there is no 'shakin the tank' to get another mile or so.... DAMHIK.
I fill mine to the bottom of the cap hole (on side stand) and never had any spill problems.

Last month I underestimated how long a dead end was(87miles) and had 302 miles on the tank when at the gas station. Put in 3.82 gal. From earlier observations the last bar comes on somewhere between 1.3 & 1.5gal. left. The alternating fuel pump and last bar flashing comes about 25 to 30 miles later, leaving .8 to 1.0 then. I only fill to the top of the tank neck.

Always try to fill mine early rather than running really low out of concern about fuel pump damage or overheating or sucking junk into the filter. The most I have put was 4.86 gallons.

Run out?

Have any of you really seen a strom hurt the pump by running out? When we went to Alaska the last leg of gravel to DeadHorse we filled the gallon can for the first time on the trip. One of the two 1000 stroms was not getting the mpg as the rest of us.The other 1000 owner and builder of our boxes made a stand for the can in front of a box. This was last gas stop before DeadHorse we filled up at.He was blinking long before DeadHorse.
You that have been know how dirty and not like most places it is.If we had not asked a local would never have found gas.It was a small place with big steel covers over the pump hoses and top to keep bears from tearing them up. Mounted flush with the wall. You went inside and no one around. All with card and ..please close pump cover when you leave. The 1000 ran out before we found the place and they poured most the gallon in his and rest in the other 1000. We found the place soon after and re filled the can for trip back. The one that ran out never had any trouble after.Ran out in my C50 once and my Nomad once with no pump troubles after and lots more miles. None of us ever intend to run out IMO. Unless wanting to see how far we can go and bring gas with us.
