Engine red light after swap

Hi All,

Ive searched this forum for posts about this problem but could not find it. So here is the deal and I hope somebody has some idea that could help.

first of all bike - Vstrom 2006 650
At the end of last season my bike had a big engine fail and after looking with a garage for different solutions, the most "price-perfomance" solution was to swap the entire engine.

The bike work great, there are no problems with it beside that there is a problem that garage cant fix. It doenst effect the perfomance but it is annoying - a lot. Every time the red warning light comes on - guys in the garage tested the bike a lot and there isnt any issue with it as far as hardware goes, so the error is probably located in electronics/ECU.

Has anybody had the same issue maybe so I can suggest the guys what to check on as they ran out of Ideas? Bike has now done cca 1000km and will go for oil change service this weekend and hoppefully we can solve the light issue as well. The light goes on after about a minute, every time (cold or warm bike).

thank you in advace for your help and tips

best regards,
Rok

Probably a sensor unhooked or bad. You might be able to put the bike in "dealer mode" and see what codes are present.

Do you get an icon along with the light? An oil can icon may involve the oil pressure sender for example. What was the cause of the original engine failure? Is the replacement engine from a 2004-2006 model? Here's how to use dealer mode. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,7061.0.html

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

Greywolf is probably right on. My engine has been in and out twice(Once with a replacement and then a year later with the original rebuilt.). Never a code or light in this process.

Hi,

thanks for the replies. Last year I was unable to ride so my cousin was riding whole season and did not check oil levels. I have checked today - no icon shows, only the light and error code F1 (or FI).

we will try the dealer mode if anything else shows.

The red light is on to call attention to the FI. Let us know what the code is in dealer mode. It's hard to believe the dealer checked and did not tell you the specific area the code would indicate was a problem. That you had an FI would have helped if you had included it in your first post. Realshelby hit the nail on the head when I thought he was on the wrong track because you didn't mention the FI. The link to dealer mode is down right now so try again later if you get an offset error.

All that is required is to connect the white wire with a red stripe from the ECM to ground. Your bike has a 6 place connector with a rubber cover under the left side cover below the seat. Two of the four wires are white/red and black/white(ground). It's a convenient place to access dealer mode. If the bike was error free, -C00 would appear where the FI is now. If there is an error, a number will appear instead of the 00 and that number will narrow down the problem area.

Unless the contacts in the tip over sensor are stuck or the sensor is mounted in the wrong orientation, cycling the ignition will clear a C23. The engine should not run with an FI showing a C23.

Ok. I will take it out and check how it looks. could it be that when they put the bike together they made a mistake with wiring? additional issue I have just noticed now is that also front lever when pushed, brake light doesnt go on - when I push rear it lights up w/o problem. I have cleaned the connector on front break sensor but still no brake light. I will go accoriding to wiring diagram and check both connections. if that wount help than changing both sensors.

If you are also having brake light issues that does point to wiring issues. Which is probably where your red light is coming from. No easy fix, just start tracing wires. A manual is needed to do this right, but you might get lucky and find a bad connection just by looking and inspecting everything you can get to.
