I know the wisdom is that you should change chains and sprockets at the same time as a worn out chain will wear out new sprockets quickly and vice-versa. I'm thinking of putting a 16T front sprocket onto my bike which has 5000 miles on the original chain / sprocket and which has been Scottoilered since new, so is it prudent, or just a waste of money, to fit a new chain / rear sprocket at the same time?

With that low of mileage and a Scottoiler no need to replace anything but the front sprocket.

Shouldn't be a problem. I did the same 16 tooth change over at around 5000 and went almost 14,000 more before a new chain went on. Sprockets still looked near new even then.

I changed the chain and not the sprockets, of they are not worn, why replace them?

Front sprocket, not a worry.

If you change the fronts when they start to show wear you'll usually get more chain life anyway. They wear 3x faster than the rear. With an oiler the chain stretching to match the sprockets if the main life eater.

I have just replaced the 15T with a 16T after 16.500km - without replacing chain and rear sprocket.
I also use a Scottoiler and the chain and sprockets still looks like new.

I have found that the OEM sprockets are pretty damn good on the suzukis too. The L2 has a Sunstar rear.

If you went to aluminum Renthals for twice the price I bet they would last half as long.
