I too, recently had the notion that I'd like a different color on my 2007 DL650. Instead of painting, I too, looked into the new vinyl car wraps. I went from blue paint (see photos) to a "brushed aluminum" tank and rear side panels, and a satin black fairing. I used the 3M #1080 car wrap.

Great work everyone. Really inspiring, but the fear of screwing something up and wasting the vinyl (I know, silly) is keeping me from doing this.

Is it easy to fix mistakes?

Edit: NM patches to fix mistakes? Yikes!

If you don't like the way it goes on the first time, you can pull it off and do it again. I did that several times. Warm room temperature helps, it makes it easier to put on and take off. I did mine in a cold basement and the adhesive had more bite when it got colder.

Do you apply the film dry or use a wetting solution (water/soap) and then squeege the water out? And when does the heat gun come into play?

Could one of you pro filmers give us a short step by step just to get some of us noobs started??

Something like:

Remove side panel
Clean side panel
Peel off films adhesive backing
Lay film on side panel
Start squeeging the film smooth ironing out all bubbles
heat film where curves are steep
keep squeeging.........

Or something like that!!

And...........how did you get the film into those little recessed bolt holes in the side fairings??
