It was $513 for all vinyl solo half moon pattern, with rain cover and UPS ground shipping to me from California. I also had to send them a seat to build it on.

Rain cover? You mean $513 and it isn't waterproof? That seat would never work for me in Seattle. I can't be bothered to pull over just to cover my seat. I'd spend a lot of time on the side of the road. Or just ride with the cover on all the time.

Water can enter through the stitching. Any stitched seat is in the same boat. It isn't a problem unless the foam soaks up a lot and it isn't given a chance to dry, which can result in mold growing. I plan on riding it without the cover in the rain except for extended downpours but covering the seat when it is parked.

I see. Well good info for those that have a Russell. I have never had an issue with a stock seat, and my seat doesn't have sewn seams, so I suppose it is something I don't have to worry about. I was just surprised to see a Vinyl cover requiring a waterproof cover.

OTOH, I only put it on for road trips anyway, the OEM is better for sliding side to side when riding around town.

So GW how is the comfort level on the new Russell? What is longest time spent on it so far?

I've taken one trip of a little over 300 miles with a short stop in the middle for lunch. There wasn't a hint of discomfort. It's the by far most comfortable seat I've ever owned and I had after market touring seats on 3 former bikes that were very good, including the Sargent on my old Wee.

OK, thanks for the comment. My next question is; How does one "test drive" a custom seat?

One buys a custom seat. There is no test. If not satisfactory, most custom seat makers will rework it based on customer feedback. The customer may pay extra for that, at least for shipping. A lot of success in the business comes as a result of building a reputation. Don't do good work and you aren't in business long.

Russell will re-work the seat twice, at no extra charge. You only need to pay shipping back to them, and they pay for return shipping. That said, I bet most of them are close enough to perfect when they arrive. I know mine was. Best mod ever!
Great looking bike, I love the color.
