In the latest Motorcycle Consumer News, the 2012 Adventure was well received. However, in the specs they mentioned "fuel: Premium".

My Pre-2012 (06) seems happy with regular. What's 2012 manual say -- regular or premium?

If the manual says 87 octane, then that is regular not premium... I am willing to bet it is the same as the pre '12 version... Meaning it can use Octane rating of 86 or higher...

If you live in an affluent area and you bump into a enighbor or business associate whom you may wish to impress, you should always spring for luxury gas, I mean 87 octane, really?

How are you going to continue hoodwinking people into believing you're riding a BMW if they catch you using poor people gas?

Maybe that's why they are only getting 46 mpg, and I am getting 55 mpg, I use regular 87 octane

I've noticed a roughly a 5-7 mpg increase when I use premium. I haven't done the math to see if there's any value in running premium, so I just use 87.

Octane Myths
• High octane gasoline improves mileage.
In general, if your car is designed to run on 87 octane gasoline, high octane gasoline will not improve

I tried some 91 octane just to see how it felt. Kinda like the seat of the pants dyno. Didn't notice any difference. I used 87 during break in since I didn't give it any throttle. Not really noticing the bike being any "peppier."

I usually just get 89 octane at 87 prices. High octane is a waste of money on this bike IMO.

There's a Marathon station not far from the house that advertizes ethanol-free 90 octane gas. That might be worth the extra bucks.
