Default Mirror bolts?

So I got my mirror extenders in. Thought, easy, 5 minute job......

On the stock mirror stems, the fitting that goes into the handlebar and the nut above it, are they supposed to move? Did Zuki torque them to about 1000000 ft/lbs???? I cannot for the life of me get that nut to budge so I can rotate the stem to the right angle.. Anyone?

thanks
AL..

I put a wrench on the upper part of the fitting where the stem goes in. Then I rotated the whole mirror/stem in the fitting.

You need to separate the two silver parts first. Heat helps as they have thread locker applied. Then the conical brass fitting can be worked loose.

Don't forget that one is a backwards thread... You don't want the wind loosening it.

I'm not absolutely certain, but I don't think so.

You know I would never second guess you as a rule but my neighbor just bought a '12 and totally destroyed, I think, his left side mirror bolt trying to loosen it. After going back to the dealer to find out why he couldn't loosen it the mechanic put a wrench on what was let of it and turned it clockwise... loosening it. The irony is that my buddy is a mechanic and he didn't even pick up on the fact that it may be a backwards thread.

I'm pretty sure it was the left side that was reversed... which makes sense as the wind would push it tight, not loose.

Then it may have changed for 2012. It's not mentioned in the 2012 manual. It just says to remove the mirror.

You guys are great, going to break out the break-free and torch.

Sheesh, think I pretty much buggered up the rhs one - at least the
rubber shroud will cover my ham fistedness. And the faces on the nut
isn't even a "proper" 17mm. More like 16.8, just enough slop to start
rounding corners..

Thanks Mucho!

Al..

Al..
Take a good look to make sure the same system is used for 2012. That's a 2007 mirror in the pic. Let us know if you find any changes or if the left mirror has a left hand thread.

Honestly, the mechanic I watched free up the "stuck" mirror last weekend just put two wrenches on it and turned it backwards... POP!
