Glad i read this this morning. Noted the same on my new machine last night and had a bit of worry myself. (does the 12 have a cat. converter in the muffler?)

All V-Stroms have cats. All cat elements are placed where the pipe meets the muffler. 650s got larger cat elements starting in 2007.

About comfort........ Didn't realize I needed a complete new brakeline for the 2012 when getting my Gen Mar Risers. The brakeline system is about $250.00 from Blair - gong to need to wait a little. Suzuki said it will not effect the bike's one year warrenty, but the ABS warrenty will be voided.

WINDSHIELD, I'm going with the 22" GIVI shield, bought the Madstad bracket and all seems well. For now I have the OEM 08 shield on the new bike.

CENTERSTAND, have a spare center stand from my 08 that was repaired, going to see how that works. Read somewhere that there's no rubber mounting area. It will be noisy until I figure out how to fix that.

CRASBARS, The GIVI engine gaurds fit really nice, glad suzuki didn't change that part or the frame.

Skid Plate......is coming sometime next week. I'm getting a used NarcosisJunkey Bash plate. His thread said it fit's the '12....I'll find out.

Thumbs up

Hi Andreas, Just a heads up, Suzuki never canceled or challenged anyones abs warranties with our Lifetime Guaranteed SS Line Kit on the 2007 - 2011 DL650 abs models.

I don't actually recall anyone posting up that their abs failed and required warranty on the 2007 - 2011 models either, so I would expect that number to continue with the 2012 models,

Enjoy the ride, and best regards,
Blair

Hey folks,

Sorry it took me so long to upload a pic of the B&B off road bashplate. Turns out it was easy to fit, although I could have done with the right size shifter instead of a crescent .

The instructions say to remove the oem rack from the bike and then attach the steel rack, but when the steel rack is installed it covers the bolts that mount the oem rack. You have to leave the oem rack on the bike and then mount the steel rack. There's just enough room to slip a wrench in and hold the nuts when tightening the forward bolts on the steel rack.

Mounting the Coocase adapter plate on the steel rack was kind of a challenge too because the adapter covers the bolts mounting the steel rack to the oem rack so you have to mount the adapter after the rack is on the bike. Again, there is very little room to work, so I used a small piece of tape to hold the nuts in an open-end wrench until I was able to get the hex head screws started in the nuts through the top of the Coocase adapter.
Yesterday, I added Givi side-racks and E21s, which meant I had to remove and reinstall the Motech steel rack. Speaking in purely technical terms now, this was a bitch-plus . The Givi brackets take up some of the space underneath the forward mounting bolts and make getting the nuts started on the bolts nearly impossible . If I hadn't already had the plate installed once, I probably would've given up on it. I wound up taping one of the nuts into a small needle nose pliers that had a 90* bend, and then after numerous attempts , I was finally able to get the nut started on the threads.

Honestly, this was a piss-poor design by SW-Motech. The plate looks nice, but how they could overlook the fact that it covers up the bolts that mount the oem rack to the bike.

I went with the E21s because I wanted to add some additional storage without making the bike ridiculously wide. As it stands, the bike is wider than I'd hoped for, nearly as wide as my FJR was, but I'm still happy with the results.

Here's some (not very good) photos:

I'm sorry you had so much trouble installing the steel toprack. I went and spoke with on of our tech reps about this issue. He (Matt) was aware of it being slightly difficult to access the two front bolts. We then went and had a look at the bike and determined the best plan of attack and added a note the website.

Quote:
Installation Tip: The two front bolts on the steel toprack have very limited room to install the nuts to the bottom of the rack. To position the nuts properly place a piece of tape on an open-ended wrench. Place the nut in the open-ended wrench and insert it into position from the side (near the grab handle rail). With the nut in position drop the bolt through the steel toprack and thread it into the nut being held in position by the open-ended wrench with the tape.
Thanks for pointing this out. Hopefully this will help others going forward.

Hopefully, SW-Motech will make a revision to the rack. Installing the rack alone wasn't terribly difficult, but with the Givi siderack brackets taking up some of the space, it was darn near impossible. Maybe SW-Motech side rack brackets are positioned differently and wouldn't be in the way as much? Either way, if the rear oem rack ever needs to be removed, the whole aggravating process will need to be repeated. If I ever have to remove it again, I will likely take the steel rack to a machine shop and have some holes made over the oem mounting bolts.

I believe that is the case. Here is a shot of the SW-MOTECH sideracks:

I do not have images of the Givi side carriers to compare with but from your images it seems that the position is much better on the SW-MOTECH set-up to put both on the same bike.
