I picked up a new to me 06 Dl650 last night. Just under 10k miles, and in overall great shape. It however has an issue I'm hoping someone can help me with.
When you turn the turn signals on , left or right, the 4 way flashers come on. The 4 way flasher switch works properly.
Any suggestions as to why the turn signal switch activate the 4 way flashers?
Somewhere a black and a light green wire or the contacts to them are shorted together. The left side handlebar switch or the wires to it are the most likely culprits. Sometimes a person will mistakenly switch the screws in that switch. The shorter one should be in the back. If the longer one is put there, it can hit the hazard switch and cause problems.
My '07 Vee just developed the same problem. I took the switch apart, examined the terminals, checked the wire insulation, spread things out a bit. No results. I followed the wire bundle back under the fairing - massaging, twisting, bending. No results. I'm not even sure the black and light green wires are both in there, but . . .. Every once in a while it will work normally for a few tries, then revert back to activating the flashers. Definitely seems like a short somewhere. So, I guess it's off to the shop for some electrical work. Most unpleasant.
I fixed my problem by removing the tail to find a mouse had chewed through some wires causing them to short out. Easy fix with some electric tape. Hope this helps
Ok, so I took the tail apart and sure enough, my tire repair kit had caught the black and lt green wires against the edge of the underseat storage box, and voila! Shorted wires. Easy fix. Thanks for the tips and encouragement.
