Wow!! Just mounted my Happy Trails "nerf" bars yesterday. (sorry, haven't taken any pix yet) Man are those things stout! They're not just decoration, and if the bike ever gets dropped, they look like they will protect the tank and the plastic parts. I don't, however, intend to test that theory. They went on easily and everything fit perfectly. Happy Trails even lists the proper torque values for the screws provided. Nice touch.

What values did they specify? They are wrong in the service manual.

I'm going to need some new crash guards, and while I was considering just getting another set of SW-Motechs, am interested in alternatives! |

I didn't look in the service manual, but it's for a 2004--2006 650. Mine's an '09.

Not bad. The service manual says 25.5lb-ft which is wrong for all years of 650. The accepted value for a typically hardened 8mm bolt is 16.5lb-ft as is stated in the DL1000 manuals for the same bolts.

Here's some pix. I apologize for the quality, but it's crowded in the garage and it was just a bit cold to wheel the bike outside, and the wind is currently blowing like sixty!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As you can see, these nerf bars, as Happy Trails calls them, extend out a little farther from the bike than some other makes. They also extend up higher to provide decent protection in the even of a tipover. Lastly, the steel tubing seems to be of a larger diameter than some others I've seen, and they are powder coated with what appears to be very durable crackle finish, similar to Rhinocoating.

Can you take the plastics off without taking the bars off?

I never gave that any thought, but it looks like it can be done. Haven't had any reason to do that yet.
