This last weekend I took the bike for a small ride.
I rode over the side walk, the front bottomed (I guess) and there was a knock from the front. It sounded like the fork brace was hit. I examined the bike but saw no damage. On the highway, 10 minutes later, I noticed that the brake lever sometimes moves backwards (towards me) slightly, about 1/4 inch , when I shift the gears up. I see it and I feel it in the right hand fingers. In particular in 1st to 2nd gear is was evident. WTF? ![]() How does changing gears affect the brake lever? Is something wrong with the ABS, or maybe this is normal and I never noticed it before? Is this electrical, mechanical? My bike has 14K miles and is due a large service soon. Maybe it has to do with the brake fluid? There are no warning lights, FI codes, etc. Braking and ABS still works fine - I tried to lock both front and rear brake and felt the ABS working (it 'pumps' the brake levers, both right hand and right foot). Any ideas? EDIT: As a side note, I will do something about the spongy front, stiffen it somehow (springs, fork oil). I don't want to have this thread go off-topic on how to prevent the next bottom out.

Check the lever adjuster. It might have moved. Push the lever forward and turn the dial to your preferred setting.

But why would the lever move? from the acceleration?

The brake lever normally points down a little from the pivot. If the adjuster isn't keyed, acceleration can move the lever backward.

I'm embarrassed to say I never adjusted it in two years, and have no idea how to do it.. (yeah, I will RTFM).

If you decide to add fluid to the forks to address the spongey feel, be careful to not overfill as you can cause hydraulic lock and cause fork seal(s) to leak. There are good aftermarket products aimed at this issue. Race Tech...Ricor Intiminators....to mention two available. The Ricors are easier to install.
