My Wee has a clunk at the front. It's only when you hit a resonable bump in the road but in Yorkshire thats pretty regular.
I've had a good look around but can't find a cluprip. Nothing I know how to get at seems overly loose. So I'm just wondering, if you had a front end 'clunk' that only happened on pot holes and speed bump type stuff, where would you be looking? Many thanks in advance. (though on a side note, does anybody know if the seals for the rear brake on a vee 2008 are generally the same as the wee 2008? I ordered the wrong set on ebay. When I realised, I went back and ordered the right ones from the same guy. He then put them both in the same pack. I cant tell the difference between the two sets.) |

They all clunk. It's normal. Both bikes use the same rear brake calipers as long as the 650 is non ABS.

A few months ago, far from home, I heard some scary noises, CLUNKs included,
and they seemed to come from the front wheel. I parked as soon as I could, hoisted my heavily-laden Wee-Strom onto its center-stand, and tried to find the source of the noise. It seemed to be coming from the front somewhere. I had visions of some sturdy piece of front brake detaching itself from the bike and dangling into the front wheel, thus bringing me to an abrupt and very painful halt. I piled coat and helmet onto the pile of gear at the rear, to bring up the front end. I rotated the front wheel and looked for trouble. Nothing was wrong. I didn't find the cause of the noise. Everything up front was sound and solid. You can imagine I was a tad nervous about resuming my ride, but I did just that. A few hundred scary miles later, I reached home safe and sound. I unloaded only what I needed for the night, and resolved to find the answer in the morning. With the bike unloaded, it was quite obvious: the rear bolt holding the chain guard had escaped, so the chain guard was bouncing around on the swing-arm and making all those clunky noises. Cost to fix: 20 cents. I have no idea why the sound seemed to come from the front end, but I know that acoustics is a complex science, and of course the path that the noise took was complex. Wearing a helmet makes it tough to pinpoint a sound's source. So have a look at your chain guard. It might be the culprit. I don't really think it is, but you never know. Good luck in any event. Keith

Thanks Greywolf
That's a huge help. I guess I'll have a spare set of seals when I stip the caliper down. |

Thanks. I guess I should get round and check everything else is present and correct, not just up front. The clunk has been there as long as I remember but I've been noticing it more of late. I guess riding in the snow and ice makes you want to have more confidence in your steering and suspension.

Sometimes the bolt that secures the fuel tank allows the tank to shift slightly on the rubber holders, causing a 'clunk' when you hit a bump big enough to jiggle the tank. Search on fuel or gas tank clunk on the internet and you'll see how to investigate this Vstrom peculiarity.

My chronic clunk was fixed by tightening the steering head bearings. Your situation may differ, of course.
