The back story:
Diagnosed 2008 Wee with burnt stator. (ohmmeter showed connection from windings to ground) Bike ran fine as long as the battery was charged, but stator wouldn't keep it charged. Sent the Stator off to Rick's motorsports for rewinding. Stator came back, looked good, ohmmeter checked out fine. battery is fully charged. Put it all back together, and... Bike cranks over nicely, but never fires. I've checked the run switch, fuel pump, etc. Only thing i can think of is that the sensor attached to the stator is no longer working correctly. It looks like it pulls some sort of timing pulse from the rotor. However, I have no idea how to check that sensor to see if it works as I don't have a manual for the bike. The stator assembly is the only thing thats changed off the bike since i sent it for rebuild, so i have a strong suspicion that that sensor could be the issue. Help! --Joel |

Okay, problem solved. After trying a normal start for over 5 minutes of cranking without firing, all i had to do was wide open the throttle and voila it starts to add more fuel, and the bike fired up. stumbled for about 10-15 seconds, but then it cleared and ran fine.
my working theory: The injectors are at 50k miles, so after sitting for so long, they drained out, forming a bubble in the line. the fuel needed to run at idle is so low, that it never surged the injector bubble out. opening the throttle gave a longer pulse, which pushed the bubble out and it started running again. in any case, it seems to run fine, and it's charging up a storm(strom?) now. --J |

The usual cause is excess fuel in the intakes. It's usually from vapor moving from the fuel tank through the vent system on charcoal canister equipped bikes. Opening the throttle allows extra air to enter to counter the excess fuel. If a Strom cranks but doesn't start quickly, opening the throttle is the first thing to try.
