Now, if you could come up with an articulated hitch arrangement using the bicycle's steering head, you could tow the bicycle and use it for trailer to haul your beer cooler...

A little. But, that is mainly what the strap is for coming from the stem down to the passenger pegs. When I crank down on that, the suspension (the bicycle's), compresses, and the rear of the bicycle actually lifts up - so all of the weight/load is carried around the front fork of the bicycle. Mostly only feel it when there is a heavy cross-wind. It kind of acts like a sail

That is pretty dang cool. I've seen many many people do this on many bikes... great idea.
