Default Headlights Malfunctioning

Is it normal for the headlights to temporarily turn off while the starter button is pushed? I purchased the 2007 Wee in April and it has always done this, I just figured that's how Suzuki designed it, but now I'm starting to wonder because just yesterday the headlights stayed off after starting. Sometimes the headlights didn't even come on at all. It must be noted that this happend after riding 1 1/2 hours in pouring rain. Your replies are much appreciated.

The headlights dissconnect when the starter switch is depressed to reduce voltage demands. As the switch wears it may act up. My vee has a slightly different switch design and at 50,000 miles or so it had to be dissassembled and the contacts cleaned up. Now back to normal.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm on vacation in Colorado, but when I return to Kansas, I'll try to clean the starter contacts. I was kinda hoping I would get stranded here.
