I don't ride off-road and I still don't like the oil filter sitting out in the open like it does so I made this filter protector from a 2" fernco coupling and a 2" ABS pipe cap. Just split the coupling down the seem and open the clamps to allow it to slip in about 1/2" and tighten clamp. Slip the other open end over filter till it hits the block and tighten the other clamp. Done. Twenty minutes tops. I haven't riden with it yet but can't see any problems as the plastic cap doesn't touch the filter. Has just a bit of flex at the cap end to allow for movement. Should stop anything I will hit that wouldn't destroy more than the filter anyway. I'm trying pic for the first time so? Don't know how to make them small enough for this forum, help!!

Go to photobucket and post your pic there, then copy the link to your post here. I want to see the pic.

I was able to add the pics to the original post. Thanks, I'm still new at this but it worked perfectly.

It just touches the block at the base of the filter and shouldn't get that hot since it has a 3/4 split.
If it does, it can pulled out 1/4" so that it doesn't touch the motor. Will have to see. Last edited by msy88; 02-06-2008 at 11:15 PM. Reason: can't spell |

I splurged for a full skidplate since I managed to dent my pipes twice on the road (brick flipped up once, big hunk of broken pavement once), but getting some protection on the filter is a good start. Can't imagine doing gravel roads with it hanging out there like that. To hijack your thread, I noticed some oil on your front cylinder. Any idea where that's coming from?
