so, 2007 DL1000, 15,000 miles. relatively new tires, chain adjusted and rear sprocket appears to be in decent shape. Richland Rick spacer in place. every so often, as i'm starting off from a stop, i hear a clunking noise from the rear. not 100% sure, cuz it may be my mind playing tricks, but i can almost feel the thud through the seat. mind you, i ride conservatively, so my starts are gentle.
Ding ding ding. /touches nose/ this is a pretty good place to start looking. If you are hearing a metallic thunk that's the first place I'd look. Then I'd check the cush rubbers in the rear hub. TIP* If your sprocket assembly just drops out of the hub you need new cush rubbers. Worn cush rubbers will give you a subdued "thump" when you take off.
maybe he was being nice cuz i'm a friggin mechanical idiot.
i'll check the brakes but something tells me it's comin from the other side. riding home today, it was very prevalent while accelerating gently from a stop through around 35. and it actually is more like a low pitched ticking than a thump.
That's fine if you get 30k miles from your chains. That's almost how much I got from the oem just cleaning it with WD40 - and no lube. :green_lol: ... it had no kinks when I changed it.
This post is over 3 years old. I would suggest looking at the things mentioned. Very often people figure out the problem and then never post up what they found.
If you ride in the wet, check for a kinked link. I had a Suzuki Katana that after a long ride that ended with over an hour in torrential rain, I turned off the main road and when I started accelerating it did this. I thought (bike was new to me) the gears went bad. It was just the rain had washed all the lube away and then a few links were binding up.
