Default Doubts about my DL1000

Three months ago my DL1000 V left me on the side of the road about 80 miles from home. Got it to the shop and the entire charging system was shot.
Magnets even came loose on stator. Replaced evrything with OEM including the rectifier, and to be safe got a new battery.
Next trip is to the iron horse for our get together and thats about 400 miles away.
I just dont feel sure about the bike any more. Its the only time its left me stranded in 20,000 miles but once bitten, twice shy.
Bike has 34,000 on the clock.

David

not sure what it is you're looking for, but most likely, the collective is going to chime in on how bulletproof the strom is in general, yada yada yada.

all i'll say is it's mechanical and will eventually breakdown like every other mechanical device in the universe. you either deal with it, or walk.

The stator is one of the "known flaws" in the Vee. I'd say if the shop did a competent job replacing the parts, your bike is as reliable as any other average bike out on the road, probably more so. To put it in perspective, I used to ride my '77 HD out of town never knowing if it would come back on it's wheels or on a truck, but I always went. Your Vee is infinitely more reliable. Sign up for AMA or AAA towing and don't sweat it.

Just ride, these apprehensions will pass with the miles

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-diB65scQU

You did the smart thing and though I am sure it was annoying it was handled without any permanent problem.

Keep a lighter oil filled to the brim

My crack pot theory Is this is a cascade failure from loose magnets which you now have fixed.

You are near needing a new TPS but I don't think they leave you stranded.

Anyone will doubt their machine if it fails them. I certainly do.

But, look at the big picture. You had a charging system failure and honestly that is a small percentage failure. Yet it seems to be something the Vee does a bit more of than other bikes. A little age and 30K plus miles is where it seems to crop up.

Your replacement of ALL components ( especially if the stator was OEM Suzuki ) likely insures trouble free riding for quite a long time.

ANYONE riding a Vee ( or SV 1000 ) needs to install a voltage meter! This one act will likely save most of the roadside breakdowns. It might have shown early symptoms of the charging system going downhill. It is much less stressful to fix something before it leaves you stranded even if you spend the same on repairs!

I installed one on my Vee and knew exactly when the charging system I was experimenting with quit charging. I was able to unhook the headlights and rode 27 miles in stop and go Houston traffic to home. Had plenty of power left when I got home.

2 of my favorite moments on my bike is when I pulled over to offer 2 gentlemen a lift. Both were standing next to their broke down Harlies.

Look on the bright side, you were in the U.S. when the rotor went down.

I was in Costa Rica for ONE MONTH waiting for parts!

They sent the wrong parts to boot!

Found a rotor in Guatemala and the stator was re wound, then failed shortly after.

Ended up riding with a deep cycle battery in top case and battery charger to make it back.

Think of the adventures you'll have NOT the problems!

Life is a gamble David. Break-downs are a hassle but once in 34k isn't extreme. Waaay back in the day mechanical failure was a common occurence
on extended trips. Keep a cell phone charged, an emergency charge-card and enjoy the ride. Just my $.02

I figure that you only see posts by the people who have had issue's, which is a small percentage ....every bike forum has them....For every one issue, there are thousands of owners with never a problem..
