Thanks for the responses. I'll load test the battery and see its "health". Tested the generator output again this morning. Now I'm seeing 13.5, which would be normal for a charged battery. Load test will narrow it down.
Again, thanks for the input.

I personally am betting on cascade failure
moving magnets lower voltage raising the amps Higher amps burn stator I will have a healthy battery best yuasa I can get in there then monitor voltage and if/when my signal dynamics stays yellow I will open her up You need some voltage monitoring

Let's say that it takes maybe 15% of your battery's capacity to start the engine. And the battery ages and loses 20% of its capacity each year. After the first year your battery is down to 80% at best, but no problem. Third year, 40% capacity but it only takes 15% to start, still no problem. Fourth year, 20% available; 4-1/2 years it gets dicey...and one day your battery dies "suddenly."
Your numbers might be different, but the process is the same. Yes, there might be a charging problem. Do check the charging voltages on the three phases from the alternator and pull the cover to check that the magnets are tightly glued and in evenly spaced positions.

Battery died somewhat abruptly...what am I looking at?
I would assume you're looking at your keyboard and monitor. |

First thing (and easiest) to check is the battery. Batteries can , and do, suddenly die. I have had a couple act just as you describe.

Turned out to be something related to the heated grips. Turned them off, and the battery is charging like a champ. Not sure what the issue is in the grips which would be drawing sufficient amps to overpower the bike's charging capacity, yet not burning something up....but it doesn't matter much, since it is what it is. At least I have the problem isolated.

After 5 years of no issue perfect starting - mine died completely after a short 15 mile ride to a friends house..
Took it to a auto parts store to load test - showed ok - don't trust it and good insurance to buy new. Bought new Walmart Yuasa battery and no more problems!! It was just old and time. many starts later no issues.. just needed a new battery thankfully. The old days of unhooking battery charging check now cause NEW problems with electronics.
