About one in four of the many clutch baskets sent here from the US for the sharealike full re-engineering have been tried with shims or washers. One of the oldest tricks in the book to try and patch up a completly shot clutch basket damper. Owners reported they had made things worse in what had not been that bad to start with. Certainly not better. Hence they had to remove them again and sent them over. Enough pictures and movies about on the forums once they are open to demonstrate what's wrong. My 06 Vee got a new (um, reWerked) basket at 40,000 miles however it never had the chudder problem. Which I guess is indeed proof that some bikes can run a stock basket and not have chudder. I felt it was odd that with all the things wrong with my bike, chudder was never one of them. ![]() The dreaded clutch-slap issue, now that it did suffer from real bad and the modded basket cured it 100%. But never chudered.

Nice thing about the chudder is that I guess it's more anoying than anything,I have had it for almost 30,000 miles.

This basket came here with shims in all six springs. Look how the basket swings from side to side at the hub and is pivoting about the spring at the top. Its supposed to rotate slightly about the hub as it absorbes the torque pulses by deflecting the springs in a set sequence. Other than the play at the hub seen here they go solid as far as the engines pulses are concerned. Shims in the springs - DON'T DO IT - DON'T Pre-load your springs like this - YouTube Lucky he did not carry on to find it broke or damaged the springs after 8,000 miles like here. Broken and chewed phase two spring. All that was left of the shims and broken springs in the basket. Owner needed to go search his sump for the rest. Might pay to understand just what the PO might have done to try and get rid of the chudder when buying a used V.

That last pic is definately the wrong washers, & who knows .... he may have screwed up the mod himself.
I'll wait until i develop chudder i guess,,,then i'll do the washer mod. Alot of riders seem to be happy with it. The aftermarket baskets available by a few members here are no doubt the way to go with money not being an issue, but i like to atleast try to get away without spending anything |

Was hard to believe those washers were all the same when knocked in. Angle of that picture makes those at the front look larger. Slightly larger hole in their middle is to clear the extra spring in the SV or the spring enlarged some. Owner said he followed instructions from one of the basket modification threads posted a few years ago on VSRI or here. Washers were at the suggested end of the springs (or sign of where they had been).
I don't throw money at anything either unless there is no option. I'm the very guy who first came up with the after market modification for SV and DL some years back - some owners were changing their baskets almost as frequently as their rear tire. I'm re-engineering the inside back to better tolerances than stock rather than shim with washers etc. Made the re-engineer available purely so owners had a choice and did not take risks with shims and washers. Mine has 80,000 miles on it. After doing the obvious TBS and TPS adjustments...or I should say check as mine were spot on I had the bike remapped with a Yosh box (at 35,000 miles) ....cheaper that a fuel controller since I am not a modder. My brother was hard headed like some here and lived with the fueling issue till I bought the bike and fixed it. Other than that, I put in a fuel filter at 55,000 miles. Lots of gas, many tires, and more smiles than any other bike I have ever owned. One valve adjust. Somebody bitched about chain and sprocket wear...mine goes 25,000 to 30,000 miles on a set (happy with that). Cluch chudder, I have it buts it is very mild and occurs only under load on steep hills in low gear when the bike catches me sleeping in the wrong gear. I expect 100,000 miles out of the bike....definite keeper for me as I ride 15,000 miles a year on average and its now my only licensed bike.

It can be hard to find someone with a Yosh box as a dealer remapping the fuel range outside EPA guidelines is against the law. A Yosh box remap is a service only, the remapper only buys the box once, keeps it, and uses it to change the mapping of the stock ECM on any number of bikes. As such, it should be cheaper than buying a PC. A power commander has to be bought and stays on the bike as it alters the map, not by changing the stock values inside the ECM, but only changing the signals outside it.
