Looking for help, a long way from home. I'm in Thermopolis, WY, on the road from Toronto to Yellowstone.
Its damn hot and at a stop yesterday my coolant boiled over and barfed. Did it a second time. My temp gauge never registered more than 3 bars. I will have to wait until tomorrow to pull the plastics and see if the fan is working - I don't think it is but I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts as to why I'm boiling over without the temp gauge skyrocketing? I think the reason it only read three bars is because that sensor is located on the radiator not the engine. If I was guessing I'd think maybe your thermostat is stuck.

Is there a way to unstick the thermostat?

I have never had a bike that overheated constantly, so my answer will just be from past experience with 4 wheels. Most cars will overheat and never show a temp light if they are low on fluid. Steam doesn't register on most sensors. I would advise checking the coolant level in the morning when cool, fill if low, burp the system if real low. If your radiator is full, you may have multiple issues. ie, stuck thermostat and a bad sensor. Your fan may not come on due to a bad temp sensor.

If it's only happening when stopped...then for some reason the fan isn't coming on. Switch? Wire or harness that's worked itself loose? Should be easy to troubleshoot. If it's cool when cruising....I wouldn't worry too much. I bet/hope it's a wire or the relay.

Its morning.
Rad is full of fluid and wires/plugs seem to be intact. Sent from my AT100 using Motorcycle.com Free App |

Jumpered the plug from the Rad sensor and the fan fires. Looks like my problem is upstream of there. Ill buy what I need to wire a manual switch which will do for now.

I would agree with wingnut11 on the stuck thermostat theory. Removing the thermostat is a PITA if you're on the road but you can ride without it. Second theroy: I have a 2006 Vee and I have learned that if it is even a "little" low on coolant it will overheat soon as I slow down for traffic. I kept topping off the rad & reserve tank on every heat/cool cycle and eventually it stopped taking fluid and the problem went away. -Ej-

May not help much but...........if you stop somewhere to refill and/or "burp" the system, go to a auto parts store and buy a bottle of Water Wetter........it claims to lower Rad temps. Lots of racers use it (when anti-freeze cannot be used at tracks). Not going to "cure" the problem.........but might help enough to limp home.

Your radiater cap could be bad, allowing fluids/steam to escape at lower temps as indicated on the dash.
